eve is a sandbox this doesnt come close the eve.
but its fun and i would try it if i was you.
STO is definately higher on the casual 'fun' aspect of space combat too, where losing a ship is just part of the game and not the end of a months work. Overall I think if you want to just jump into a spaceship and blow things up without a load of stress, then try STO.
Really though, they're quite different games. The enjoyment of STO is more about what you can do 'in the moment' than how well you prepared beforehand(not saying there isn't an element of that in STO). I'm reluctant to say that EVE is more complicated, as both games actually have quite a lot of depth an intricacy to their mechanics that take a while to fully understand. EVE does offer/support a wider variety of playstyles, however. STO is primarily about combat - both ground and space. Also, STO is heavily instanced, whereas EVE is not.
As Vashkur stated, STO is great if you're just wanting to get in there blow things apart with a spaceship without being burdened with all the logisitics of EVE. It's also got a lot of endearing elements like your own personal Bridge and Duty Officers that help sell the idea that you're in command of an actual starship, so it just 'feels good'.
Well, it won't hurt for you to run STO's tutorial. Takes maybe an hour, and it's an accurate representation of how the rest of the game is going to play out.
It's fine for what it is, but it sounds like you're looking for a very different kind of experience. Something more in the vein of a space flight/combat/trading/exploration sim in a primarily multiplayer environment?
There's nothing like that out there at the moment, but two in development - Elite: Dangerous (March 2014) and Star Citizen (Q1 2015). They may suit your tastes more than either EVE or STO.
It sounds like STO is Star Fleet Battles with RP elements where EVE is just the player sandbox, some RP, but mainly gankfest.
I may check out the tutorial, and thanks to all for the honest opinions.
Everything you do in EVE is to get more money so you can train new skills, buy new ships, and new equipment. Also, PvE and PvP are nearly impossible if you don't have a decent ship or equipment...and both of those cost a fair amount of ISK (EVE currency).
Oh, and EVE won't hold your hand in fights. If you lose your ship and its equipment to NPCs...it's gone for good until you buy replacements.
That being said, once you're situated in EVE you can have a lot of fun! You can get tactical way more in EVE than you can in STO! It's pretty satisfying waiting cloaked in an asteroid field to ambush members of a rival corporation (EVE guilds).
