its just like the "cs, wow and all the old mmos" all over again.
Thing is, the game is very solo-friendly and people tend to forget to pay attention to chat because they rarely use it. Additionally, this is an international game; there are people who may not be proficient with English. (There is a very sizeable number of German players in the community, for example.)
That being said, there are definitely very active chat channels and communities out there if you know where to find them or otherwise choose to join up with them.
What if I just want to play the game and don't want to worry about what other people are saying? Does that make me rude? Does it make me rude that I want to enjoy the game without having to check the chat box every five seconds? Just my opinion. I understand where you're coming from I just disagree with your statement that it's rude. Honestly the only thing I would use a chat box for is to explain quantum electrodynamics to people who don't even understand Newtonian physics. The emoticons they make are hilarious!
This, I don't use the chat either. I actually rarely play the game with people, I just do so when I have to, essentially group event, that I would gladly do with npc if it was possible. And I really don't see how that would make me rude. The game is extremely singleplayer oriented, STO is more MSingleplayerO than MMO. Is it rude to don't pay attention to people when you don't need to. Would you think people are rude for not lisening your conversations in, say a restaurant ?
