Game crashing after I press ''engage''
Ok, this is getting annoying, I've tried everything from starting in safe mode, verifying game files, turning off my firewall, disabling steam overlay, forcing the game itself to verify it's files but nothing seems to work. My graphics driver is up to date too.

The game crashed once while updating but that was it, now I get past the launcher but upon seeing the ''legacy of romulus'' loading screen it just stops responding.

I have searched these forums and the sto forums and tried everything I've found there but nothing has worked. Anyone got any ideas?

know them feels havnt played it in a while thought i know i'll blow some klingons away just for it to crash at the exact same point as yours it works fine on my windows 7 laptop but on windows 8 its like no you shall not pass!

Verifying files through Steam does not work for this game. All that does is check the launcher/updater. On top of that, the game launcher seems to use some sort of "honor system" for telling if a file is good or not, so that crash during update corrupted a file and tricked the launcher into thinking the file is fine.

There are three ways you might fix this, one relatively short and quick, the others progressively longer. For all, you'll need to open up the STO file directory: Right click the game in the Steam Library, select Properties, go to the "Local Files" tab, and click "Browse Local Files...". From here, go into the "Star Trek Online" folder, then the "Live" folder (ought to be the only entry). From here, open "logs"->"GameClient", and take a look at the "Crash" log file. Post that here, if it's got too much techspeak to decipher. Hopefully it will list exactly which file is causing trouble, which can be easily fixed by deleting the offending file so the launcher is forced to re-download it.

Option #2 is to leave the subfolders in the "Live" folder alone, but relocate or delete all the files in there. Restart STO from Steam, and it should re-download all those files you just moved/deleted, and hopefully let you into the game or produce a more useful Crash log.

Option #3 is the scorched earth option. Keep the local file folder open, uninstall using Steam, delete everything it leaves behind (because Steam only works with the game launcher- it won't uninstall the rest of the game), and reinstall.

i think im going to try downloading it directly from the official sto site 1st

Don't worry I'm not silly enough to verify using steam, i used the launchers ''force verify'' in options. hers the contense of the crash log, I can't make any sence of it:

I'll try some of the other things you suggested, will keep you updated...... I miss my escort class vessel :(

Well, the log file is a bust. Mine produces the same output, so whatever the error is, it's not coughing up a report.

One other thing to try is to go into the "localdata" folder and edit the "gameprefs" file after making a backup of it. It'll let you set the graphic and sound options without needing to load up the game, which can be useful for startup crashes due to bad settings. I used to have a ton of seemingly random crashes during gameplay, and the culprit was the "dynamic lights" option. Setting that to 0 helped me, but this was with a game that could at least load the first couple areas.
Psyanide Jan 19, 2014 @ 4:31pm
Yeah i deleted the gameprefs file as the support page suggested, still crashing.

Now redownloading everything that was in the ''live'' folder so hopefuly that'll do it, i have send a ticket to support so if nothing else works hopefuly they will have a fix.

Kind of annoying, haven't played the game since October, I get the erge to play again and this happens :(

Hope you're having fun in STO Hapxier *shakes fist* lol xD
Psyanide Jan 19, 2014 @ 5:40pm
ok I tried reinstalling and it's still doing it, I can't even get to character select let alone gameplay :(
Psyanide Jan 19, 2014 @ 5:42pm
Also, it doesn't seem to have a dynamic lighting option to change o.O tried running in safe mode, still crashing....... ffs.
