Depending on the type of ship you fly, you'll usually just want to get within 10km and just aim your front at the enemy ship at all times and probably cut your engines entirely unless you need to turn fast (sitting completely still will cause you to turn slower - you can reverse slightly to get a boost)
I'll have to re-bind my keys, they've got W and S tilting up and down and E and Q speeding up and slowing down.
The important thing to keep in mind is that ST:O doesn't have a full 360" movement model. You're still more or less stuck on a flat surface with a bit of vertical movement. If an enemy is far above or below you, you're going to have to pull some spiral up/down wards moves to get on their height level. Can't just fly straight down (sadly)
Not sure about if you can automatically move to a target in a "combat" zone - But you can do it on the sector map to move to a specific star system or starbase.
Spend time on... what exactly? Content or approach was never mentioned. He's asking for basic ship handling help... I think you should consider reading what people actually write before you post.
As for the approach - I agree that going through the episodic content one by one is a great and fast way to get to level 50. Don't neglect your duty officer assignments either - Just filling up all of those slots with free, fast assignments at your faction homebase (Earth Spacedock, New Romulus or First City) will give you a surprising amount of experience points.
Episodes are great for equipment too - Especially the +50 ones.
Now, for the ship positioning. Do you have beams? Move broadside to the target, when you will be familiar with the game, all your tactic is to park your ship and press Attack Pattern Beta / Fire At Will, so everything melts down.
Do you have cannons (I assume you use Dual HEAVY Cannons and Turrets at aft)? Prebuff, press Scatter Volley, enjoy the things explode.
Do you have torpedoes, mines, dual beam banks (however, 1 DBB in combo with DHC is nice, or full DBB build on an escort)? Remove them and never use again (exceptions below).
Just a note:
The best builds consist of: full DHC (possibly 1 DBB OR the new Delta Alliance rep torpedo); full beams with kinetic beam; full DBB with kinetic beam and 2 omni beams. The rest should never be used - this game is broken beyond any repair in terms of damage dealing.
Remember, you should use WASD buttons to move and the mouse to look around. You can effectively use TAB to aim onto the closest target. Staying at one spot will easily make you vulnerable (minor, but useful Defense loss), especially when you are facing the OP targets with Gravity Well, Tykens Rift etc. Moving is essential, and if you don't get used to this... well, that will be damn hard.
P.S. I know this could sound like nuts to tell you that, but just keep this post in mind while you are leveling up. STO was piece of cake for leveling to max level within a few days, now they nerfed that to the death and mostly people struggle to even hit level 50 (the old cap) with ease...
There are a lot of helpful channels around in this game, like DOFFJOBS. They will be, well at times when they are not trolling each other, glad to help you. Zone chat is the cancer of any MMO, and STO is suffering from it the most. Just... avoid that, this is the best I can advise right now.
Go to Options, Controls and change the Auto-Target setting at the bottom of the menu. Then right click on your ships weapons (bottom center - right of your speed and shield indicators) and the weapons should get a green border. Now depending on your exact auto-setting, your weapons will continue to auto-fire on the enemy whenever they can.
I've been playing this game for roughly 2 years and obviously know what is up with it. Build a DPS Scimitar and try to solo a pug STF, you will enjoy your ship being the aggro magnet and die easily without the RIGHT essential auto attack management I was talking about. In case you are playing with pugs and auto fire everything you see under an ISA cube, I feel sorry for the team you are in, man... Not if the team is DPS, then hats down.
An experienced player will not use auto attack, but at least do macro on his/her SPACE bar to mash it for cycling and attacking.
Aggro = the best DPS ship (aka the ship making the most damage to the target for it focus back on the attacker).
The skill you are talking is one of the two worthless skills in this game along with the Stealth. It merely does anything. In fact, it INCREASES it. The best thing to decrease aggro is actually to use a fleet science console with [-th].
Here is for your interest: http://home.comcast.net/~amicus/Skill%20Point%20Effects.htm
What this guy said. Also, there is agro. For what other reason does my tank Galaxy R draw virtually every NPC's fire while the FAW-spamming tac ship actually manage to survive? Tanking and aggroing is a thing in this game. If you wanna test that, do Starbase 24 while threat-increasing consoles are equipped and hit FAW. Every Klingon is gonna shoot at you lol
Seriously, don't worry too much about all the technical stuff when you start. The game does have a lot of mechanical depth to it, but you're not required to know everything right at the start to have a good time.
(It usually takes most players about 1-3 months to grasp everything for their initial playstyle and 6 months to a year to pick up the nuances of all the other playstyles. It's not uncommon to see people who have played for a while who don't understand how science builds work or the drawbacks of trying to mix certain weapons - most people just think more is better, but that really only applies to the dual heavy cannon and broadsiding beam builds most players start with.)
Tips:
-Put weapon power to maximum and leave it there. If you're not at full power, you're not doing full damage with your weapons.
-Right-click weapons to set them to auto-fire(a green box will appear around them). Press Spacebar to begin firing all weapons.
-Try to keep at least one copy of Tactical/Engineering/Science Team on your ship. These are basic bridge officer ship abilities that will keep you alive. (There are numerous ways to build ships and they're not 'required', but they're good to start with and have in most cases.)
-Have fun at your own pace. It's not a race; the whole point of a game is to enjoy yourself.
As for movement:
There are fine details about moving well, but just take your time. You can get by in most cases by just setting your speed(Q/E), and then turning left or right(A/D) as needed. Vertical Movement(W/S) comes into play here and there, but you won't need to worry about it very much when you're first starting off.
If you're going too fast to keep up with, feel free to use a slower speed. (This does reduce your defense value, but you can make sharper turns and keep targets in firing arcs longer.)
You can press 'R' to switch between full and zero throttle quickly. Shift-R will kick you in and out of "Full Impulse", and later Quantum Slipstream in Sector Space.
