Does anyone even public chat anymore?

Star Trek Online chatbox used to be a chatterbox a year ago. Now nobody talks at all. I really wonder why? Is it because many players are just rude and refuse to use chatbox or they're noobs at how it works? I have not SEEN one player or anyone chat in the chatbox. It's disappointing! It used to be VERY VERY active the last few years. Now it's just like.. DIED off. No chatter anymore. What's wrong with chatting? Man it's disappointing. it seems like the only way to get advice via gaming is forums and discussion when it could be cut in half time and saved if someone would at least TALK on chatbox. I guess people are scared or stupid and don't know how zone and local channel works. It's disappointing. STO isn't gonna be popular anymore if nobody chats the chatbox anymore. I seriously wish they made Bridge Commander 2 instead of STO.

would think most are in private channels ... since the normaly run of chat is annoying as hell :o... i know i cant stand more than 5 mins of it lol

I've been ignoring public chat since beta, I glance at it from time to time, but its hardly worth being involved in. I just stick with my friends/fleet members

The only time I ever really look at the chat is out in space when I have a long way to go. The rest of the time I'm too busy playing and doing my own thing.

The most common use I have for public chat is "right click -> report as spam"

I know last year's Winter Wonderland. There was players chatting in the chat box. But there was a problem of random users constantly sending event invites, for them to join them repeatedly. Which was viewed as you could say a harassment spam. Then afterwards Star Trek Online had announced that they were going to do some changes to the chat box feature. Which they only made you only could see friends and fleet members chatting in Zone and Public chat. And no non friends or non fleet members will not be visible in chat.

It immediately mutes the user in question, so there's that... The fact that a billion others are making the same mostly-incomprehensible spam posts makes it feel pretty meaningless a lot of the time though.

That is the main reson i dont chat because now a days most people gotten rude in games.. So sorry to hear that no one chats with you :/

Yup, the mute thing yes. I was thinking more about reporting a user to be banned... that never ever worked.

Not that you'd know either way without multiple accounts and constant monitoring over several weeks to see if the person's name stopped showing on the name(s) you didn't report them under.

The Winter Wonderland is probably soaking up the social area right now, ESD has a fair amount though, you might just be catching it at the wrong times of course.
