Depending on the level of the Fleet you are joining:

Access to fleet stores, which hold some of the top tier equipment in the game and top tier consumables
Access to fleet shipyard, can purchase fleet quality ship (addiotional stuff required aswell, fleet ship module for example, which is 500Zen)

And in general "community" feeling if you happen to join an active fleet. Easier to team up for STF's when you know the people who you play with, know what they are supposed to do in any given mission. And if not, fleets in general educate new comers on pretty much anything game related.

Atleast, that's what we do in our fleet. We have personnel/officers whose "job" is to train new fleet members.

Yup, those consoles and cores along with the ships are the most sought after. The weapons, while impressive on paper no longer cut it, do not have the correct modifiers. It's all CrtD nowadays...

Embassy science consoles are very good for science ships (for particular builds).

Okay, thanks guys. :)

Basically, fleets give some promise of granting you access to other gear/ships/consoles that wouldn't be available otherwise. But, then that also depends on the fleet and how successful it is. It's really a double edged process where you do all your work for the fleet instead of yourself.

If you are lucky enough to end up in a good fleet, the reward I'm sure is worth it. But not all fleets are equal. Some have bad intentions that really hurt the whole fleet concept. I found that out the hard way. That is why I don't join them anymore. Maybe, you will do better in finding a good one than I did. Good luck. : )

There is a long a brutal history of Fleet's milking players for resources to reach top tiers then dumping them at the 1st provocation. I'd only join one that was already maxed out.

That doesn't make any sense. The more people in the fleet, the quicker you get provisions (for stores and stuff). So if you "kick" people out of fleet once max out (which btw, may take years), you'll soon run out of provisions and have nothing at the stores...

If that really happens (haven't come across myself, then again I'm in solid fleet with 300+ members) they sure are sawing off the branch they're sitting on.

Of course it doesn't. The guy you're responding to just says anything he has to to denigrate the game, even if it's nonsensical, exaggerated or is just flat out untrue. Tomorrow he'll be posting more nonsense ranting about how a new feature is screwing over players (when it's actually benefiting them) or how a certain ship or gear "sucks" and is totally useless (when it doesn't). *shrugs*

As opposed to you who have no content to offer except bashing people. Neither defending the merits of the game nor offering your perception of the problems with the game. If you even are willing to acknowledge that problems exist on a wide number of points.

What is the purpose of joining a Fleet?

1 - Social Interaction. Have others to answer your questions, run events/missions with you, talk about anything you want to (game related AND not game related), and generally get to know some of the other people actively playing the same game as you.

2 - Access to Fleet ships/items. Some Fleets will be LARGE so you can get what you want right away. Some will be MEDIUM so you can get some items that you want, but you will have to actually help build (donate to Fleet Projects) and supply (Provision) the Fleet stores in order for stuff to build up and then you will have access to Fleet ships/items. Some will be SMALL which will require alot of time and effort on the part of all Fleet Members to get access to Fleet items/ships. The size of the Fleet does NOT determine if the Fleet is good. There are horrible LARGE Fleets, and there are great SMALL Fleets. In fact there are so many Fleets out there, you can afford to leave a Fleet if you don't like it...you will always be able to find a good Fleet.

-- I don't think this happens often. A Fleet with a GOOD Fleet Leader (the Fleet Leadership style will ALWAYS tell you whether a Fleet will be good, or bad! ALWAYS!

Good Fleets make sure that their rules/regulations/etc..are clearly posted somewhere all members can see them. The Fleet website, the Fleet daily message that you see when you first login to your character, etc..

Try a few of them. Every single fleet in STO feels different from the next one. Some fleets are extremely social, and the game becomes the background for their social interaction. Some fleets are made of players who prefer to focus on teamed missions. Some fleets are composed of roleplayers, religious groups, LBGT interests, geographical locations, etc. The trick is to find a group of people whom you feel comfortable with. Don't let yourself feel trapped in a fleet you don't love because trust me, there's one out there for everyone.

Determine what it is that you want from the game. Do you need all the best gear as soon as you can get it? You might want to look for a larger fleet. Do you want more social interaction with less emphasis on gear, weapons, and loot? Then seek out a smaller fleet with people you enjoy.

Time for me to get on my soapbox:
A long time ago, before I started my current Fleets, I joined what I thought was a LARGE (it was), helpful (it was), friendly (not really) Fleet. It was run by a husband/wife team. When I first joined I was welcomed with open arms, members were very helpful, and everytime I logged in I knew I was going to have a fun time (not just grinding in the game). After about 2 weeks I discovered some things that proved to me that the Fleet and I were not a good fit. I had access to everything I wanted in the Fleet stores BUT I knew that staying in that Fleet would make me feel miserable. It didn't feel like an online home I liked to login to alot.
So I left and started my own 2 Fleets. Starfleet Research Division (350+ members), Klingon Research Division (175+ members).
Our Fleets have never sent out blind invitations (when someone invites you without talking to you first), we have only had 4 people leave our Fleets after joining (1 because he was looking for a German speaking Fleet, 3 because their real life friends started Fleets and asked them to join them). We have recruited players who have had horrid experiences in previous Fleets and had pretty much given up on them. Over 75 percent of our members like our Fleets so much they bring in all their characters (from both sides). We achieved this by offering members a casual, friendly, helpful, active, drama free, and fun environment that they log into everyday.
Are we the largest/most advanced Fleet out there? No. But we are working together to be the type of Fleet everyone wants to be in.
