it would help give understanding. however, there is much that goes beyond the series and/or movies. the movies dont help as much http://watchtvseries.se/ then type any series and watch for free :) theres many different shows including cartoons. so not just for star trek. enjoy :D

Not necessary, but will help to understand the lore. And the references to films/movies all over the place.

Progeny of various people from the series you come across, major events being to referred to, that sort of thing.

If going to see something, I'd say Voyager, because some of the actors on that have reprised their roles in this game.

:) Yes! See all the movies, and watch all of the TV episodes from every series, and buy all the books. Then try to play this game, and let me know your progress please. I am extremely interested in your success on this site. Let me know about your experience from the time you log in, and what you do next.

I was not a Star Trek Fan until I started playing STO. I was more into Star Wars.
After playing the game I started to watch Voyager, took me a few episodes to get in to it.
Lot of Trekkies dont like Voyager but personally I think its one of the best, specially season 4 when Seven of Nine comes in :D

Voyager would be a good one to check out specially with all the Delta Rising stuff that came out that has to do with Voyager. DS9 is good too

:Angered:

I haven't been able to watch the Original Series, I've watched a few episodes but bleh... hard to get in to it. I like the newer shows better. Few Original Series episodes are a must see, like the tribbles episode and the episode with the Gorn.

Okay, here we go. Comparing generations of 'Trek. Please remember that the Original series was produced with the most bare production equipment, talent, and crew as they could possibly muster up. The studio banished the project to a basement of the studio, where they did the best they could with re-used sets and stuff. There were no computer aided graphics, and the writing was cheesy and corny. Just my old penny's worth :)

All production lines of the Star Trek franchise are interesting to their own rites. The time-line in the newest Enterprise series with Scott Bacula, totally re-did the Star Trek world. It's a big universe out there, diversity and characters are what drives any production.

Agreed, TOS is from another time frame completely in real life (~50 years in 2016, yikes) and should not be directly compared to the other series. If you really want to compare the original crew (Kirk & Co) to the others, check out the films 2 through 6 and compare that with for example Next Generation (produced about the same time).

In my opion, the original crew wins hands down. Wrath of Khan still the best movie made.

Star Trek II onwards marked the beginning of a very disturbing time for the Federation and it's allies. "There will be no peace as long as Kirk lives!"

In Star Trek VII - Generations, we really see the diffenrences in the time-frame, and we get to see Old-school Kirk vs. New Frontier-school Picard. What an awesome movie!!!

Hey Foxy, we are straying from the main issue. No, you don't have to see any of the shows or movies to understand and play the game. But it is very helpful to read up on it at the star trek wikipedia. Everything you need to know about the game is there. It's a huge database of info to sift through, you are better off asking here if you have any questions.

long story short no, i was not a star trek fan nor had any interest in wanting to know more about it, but slowly became interested after questioning alot of the things in the game.

a somewhat lengthy reply about 2 years ago i made on a similar topic, to someone asking about some in game stuff

I always thought the tos stories were very good. Ng probably is my favorite and I always like the change of setting with ds9 being on a station instead of a single ship.

DS9 was very cool. Lots of interesting characters! They did fly an occasional mission with different ships.

TOS, TNG, Enterprise, DS9, Voyager are my favorites in order from TV. I liked the earlier TOS Trek movies up to The Search for Spock. I liked Generations, and Nemesis, of the TNG Movies. All else is kinda accepted but didnt make my toes curl. All the animated media was accepted with difficulty because the animation was awful and the scripting not great. Of the books its all hit or miss depending on the caracters and contracted writers involved.

It's all entertainment. Just like all these games. Too much importance is placed on time-lines, and keeping all the facts and stuff in a science fiction world just doesn't make sense. If people are too focused on how the game doesn't exactly follow any Star Trek storyline... it's a ficticious universe. It's made up. Fake. Not real, so how can it stay faithful to reality when there is none. :) Don't mind me... Im sad that this game has gone down the drain already... before I had a chance to cause trouble :)
