Borg red alert
I get an alert telling me the borg are invading so i click on it to take me to the action. Except there's nothing happening. There's a borg ship doing nothing and for some reason I can't interact with it at all; can't attack. There's no message or anything informing me what I need to do. How does that work?

Sounds like its a bug either with the Borg Command Ship not spawning (thus players abandoning the instance, which is why you see it mostly empty) or that instance is complete, players beat the Command ship, win the instance, but the instance isn't closing, so you get shuttled to an empty one.

Both of these are relatively common, and there is nothing you can do, nothing for you to do. Just warp out. Eventually you'll get a populated and or new instance of the Borg red alert.

not really sure ho w i can respond any quicker. If the server is not local to the UK (and it's not) then there's always going to be a delay. It just looks really lame turning up and not being able to do anything.

It has nothing to do with you 'responding quicker' to the Alerts, nor where you are geographically.

It has to do with the queue system that is not closing completed or failed instances. it has nothing to do with the client end (I.E. you)

The system is erronously keeping failed or completed instances open, rather than closing them. So when a player, you in this instance, queues up, you get shuttled to a complete or failed instance, rather than being put into an instance requiring another player, or opening an entirely new instance of the alert.

so i have no way of knowijng which alerts are valid and which arent

Correct.

Warp in, if its a dead zone, warp out.

Eventually you'll find a populated instance.

well you can't warp out, you just have to fly through the disappointingly empty space till you get to your destination. If these ships actually have warp drive i've not found it!

Top right of your screen, upper left icon by your minimap is a warp out button. So long as you're not in sector space, nor in combat, it allows you to warp out to sector space.

Unless-- Wait, you're already in sector space when this happens, aren't you? in which you're ALREADY at warp-speed, what you're seeing is the sector space map, which is suppose to be massive, without any other ships to fire upon, its -- for lack of a better term -- travel map.

You're not even getting into the queue from what you're describing, just the initial contact point of the Borg ship. After you transwarp to the Borg ship - in sector space - you're unable to get in due to (as I said, queue system problems) so you haven't entered any instance; you're still in sector space.

all i know is i click on the red alert icon on screen, get the option to warp to the borg, when i do so there's some borg ships and i cannot target or interact with them in any way.

yes that's what i'm saying. you click the red alert and then your bridge officer asks you if you want to join and you do so and it takes you to the borg.

This game, in a lot of places, is really confusing.

I did once, i thought it was awful.

1.) Clicking the "RED ALERT" box takes you to the location.
2.) When you arive at the location you have to enter the map.
3.) You do this by clicking another button in the pop up windows that also lists the possible rewards for compleating it.
4.) This takes you to a new map: The mission map.
5.) This is where you play out the allert.
5.b.) If the mission map is empty and/or has no dialog pop up it is bugged. You can leave with the button on the top left of the mini map.

I hope this helps. If not the OP; someone els.

On the April 30th patch Borg Red aleats now require LV50+ to enter and have a 30 Minute Cooldown before you can do it again

all i get when i click the alert is the bridge officer asking if whether or not i want to fight the borg. If i do we warp to wherever and there's a cube that I can't interaact with or attack or anything. That's it. If that's not meant to happen then the game I'm playing is broken.
