Opinions on the newer torps
I'm toying with the Dimensional Hypermass, Dark Matter and Maelstrom torps.

The high rates of fire for the first two are nice, and they all have some unique benefits, but they all have their drawbacks as well ... the Maelstrom has a LONG charge time - 3X the others - and, if I am correct, the Hypermass and DM torps both do primarily kinetic damage which means they're only effective under certain circumstances.

Of course, this also changes depending upon how they are upgraded as well.

What are your thoughts? Are they worthwhile, or are they too specialized in their application?

I gave up on the hypermass the second I saw it's not upgradable. Means I lose way too much damage potential versus literally any other torp I have at Mark XV.

The new Hypermass Torpedo is trash... there's no reason to use it. It is basically a normal torpedo with an occasional power transfer - something that would be fine if all you had were mission reward gear and such, but is a waste of a slot on any other build.

The Maelstrom torpedo is good for people who manually control their torpedo firing, as it can unload a lot of damage in a very short period of time. For people who just turn their torps on autofire and use "Fire all weapons" its not going to be worthwhile.

The Dark Matter Torpedo is good stuff for multiple reasons. Yes its primary hit damage is kinetic which will be reduced by shields but it has a guaranteed secondary effect of a 20 second physical (shield ignoring) DoT which on its own will be as trivial as any other DoT effect in space... but if that DoT effect is going when the enemy dies... they disintegrate and have no warp core breach.

Most importantly, the Dark Matter Torpedo works as part of the Lorca's Ambition set... so you can pair it with the Lorca's Custom Fire Controls console to get the 2pc bonus - a bonus that is worth having on most builds (critD buff stacking up to 25% critD). The only other piece is limited to phaser or disruptor, so... the torpedo is the usual weapon used to satisfy the set requirements.

Indeed. I use the Dark Matter Quantum on every build - as the only torpedo on energy-weapons builds, and as the third torpedo on sci/torp builds. For exactly these reasons (especially the 2pc set bonus).

Good enough! I'll upgrade the DMQ and discard the DM torp!

Thanks for saving me a great deal of time and trouble!
