Star Trek Online

Star Trek Online

Newest update = "Unsupported DirectX Version (Linux, Debian 12)
I am running Steam on Linux Debian 12, using a GeForce GTX 1080 video card, and it's been fine all along until yesterday, before the April 8, 2025, update. I was able to run Start Trek Online just fine but, after the update, it wont run, and I get this error message: Unsupported DirectX Version.

Apparently STO now thinks my card can't handle DirectX 11, yet I've been running DirectX 11 for a couple of years in Wine. Infact, I'm using DirectX 12 currently. I can't afford a new video card at this time, am I screwed and can't play STO anymore? Anyone have any Ideas?

the game does not support direct x 12, only direct x 11. you are trying to run it on direct x 12, which is not supported. you have to use direct x 11. though how you switch wine to run direct x 11 rather than 12 i do not know.

Thank you, andreasaspenberg, for your response. Games made to utilise DirectX 11 can run on DirectX 12, which is why, in Windows, if you have games that are designed to run on DX 11, but you upgrade to DX 12 your games will still be fine. Direct X is designed to be backwards compatible.

Also, my Linux installation of DirectX 12 is in its own isolated Wineprefix, as is my installation of DirectX 11. In Wine, you can create stand-alone prefixes that are independent of each other. Steam also does not utilise the OS installation of Wine, instead they use their own version of Wine and call it Proton.

However, I may totally uninstall Wine, and Steam, and try a totally clean installation and see if that makes a difference.
if you run it directly through steam, it should use proton directly. then it should theoretically work. though i suggest using the -console command then, as other users have reported issues when not using it.

Okay, all fixed! I decided to check my Nvidia driver and it was out of date. Updating my video drivers was all I needed to do!
Glad I decided to try this first rather then totally uninstalling Wine, and Steam!! :steamhappy:
star trek online some times require a driver update. that is true. it just never occured to me that that could be your issue. i had to update the drivers on my intel hd 8330 for it to run, after it was updated. not that that is my main gpu. i normally use my gtx 770m. what matters is that the issue was solved.
