How do I get a bigger ship?
What exactly do I need to do?

Hm... the answer depends on that what you already did... if you are actually leveling up your character, you will get and can choose new ships on specific predefined levels. to look for them, you can click on your point-bar in the top of the monitor, that will pop up a window with the benefits of reachable levels.

If you already reached level 50 (Vice-Admiral), you must buy your additional ships thru a fleet or the ship-dealer on esd and starbases. or you can buy them in the c-store (with zen). or you can get them randomly thru the boxes (to open them you need keys available in the exchange or c-store).

so... good luck, captain!

I feel like leveling up is soo slow! Any advice on getting there quicker?

Make the episodes first, there are a lot of experience points to collect... leveling up will go automatically ;) you will see... on the beginning it seems slow, but it will be better and much faster... and you will get a lot of tools and weapons there, that you can need.

and you will also see, after reaching max level (50) there are many many additional missions and more business to do... to get an vice admiral is surley not the only goal and not the end of the game. which level did you reach yet?

I found that elvelling up in STO was much faster than other RPGs I'm used to.

I don't see how you can call the leveling slow by any standards. By the time you get used to a ship, you already gotta hop into the next one. The only time leveling felt tedious is when you leveled numerous characters.

I am level 7

Ok... you have almost the hole game before you :)

I wish you good jobs, captain!
Leveling was slow back in 2010...

leveling is pretty quick, close to almost a level every two missions. I actually enjoy the story/campaign missions some of them are quite fun. I just got back into sto recently and loving some of the new updates to the game. Fly safe!

Eh, the faction you play as can also influence how fast you level up. There have been some revisions to bring it up to speed with the others, but the Federation is still probably the slowest - especially the sloggy Romulan and Cardassian story arcs.

I'm curious as to why you think it's slow though; you can easily hit max level in under a week if you really want to/know what you're doing(you could probably do it in a weekend if you really wanted to poop-sock it).

Really, take your time and enjoy the ride. I miss the.. wonder and adventure.. of exploring the game with my first character. There's a lot to see, do and learn; why not savor what's in your mouth before eyeballing that next bite?

I have no idea what I'm doing haha. I play federation and I spend most my time at dock (spent half a day lost in the sectors before I figured out how to warp). Most of the time seems spent traveling across sectors to missions though... I want to go into random encounters but my ship is not equipped for battle and I get smacked by battle cruisers really easy.

/nod, it might be a bit of a dis-service to your discovery of the game, but:

-Right-click weapons to set them to auto-fire.(You'll see a green border appear around each button/weapon.)
-Put weapon power to 100(the 'attack' preset at the top of the power distribution window).
-Emergency Power to Shields(from Engineer Bridge Officers) will be your main shield heal/hardener. (Science-based alternatives are Transfer Shield Strength and Science Team.)
-Hazard Emitters(sci), Engineering Team(eng), or Auxiliary to Structural Integrity(eng) can be used to take care of your hull.

As you level up and get bigger ships, the hostile encounters(and rewards) will automatically scale with you and become more challenging.

As you progress you will unlock higher tiers of ships but you should know that even end game ships vary in size greatly depending on the class and type.

Here is a list of the ships in the game:
http://sto.gamepedia.com/Playable_starship

Click on a ship for a picture and more details about it. My advice to make leveling combat easier really depends on how fast your ship will turn. If you can keep your forward firing arc on them then keep a torpedo on a front slot, use it when you drop the shields of that area of a ship. Slower method is to orbit another ship and load beam arrays fore and aft. Basically like a battleship firing a broadside, you bring all your beam weapons to bear but the con is once you stip shields it takes a little longer to whittle the hull down (as Szeron mentioned you can simply right click a weapon on the UI and it will highlight, when highlighted anytime your press the button to fire your weapons will keep cycling constantly firing whenever they can). Fire At Will is a Tactical Bridge Officer skill you can train your crew with is great with this method when combined with transferring power to weapons. Just be ready to piss off every ship around you when you use that ability.

Hope this helps and happy gaming

if your ship is going slow in deep space then it mean your ship doesnt have warp drive equipped. if you want a bigger ship, you get a new ship at level 10
