These things are a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ scam, if you dont have enough ec then you have to buy it with zen. Even if you build up your ec or buy zen they give you crap. STO get rid of them.

a lot of stuff in the lockboxes can be found on the exchange so just save up ec. Traits from the boxes are the cheapest usually. If your romulan type char ec should not be a problem if you know certian doff missions.

Pay no mind to lockboxes. Its the same in every other free mmo. Most things you can get without them.

They arent a scam since the goods exist. I know this because I own every Lockbox ship up through the Tal Shiar lock boxes (minus the Jem Hadar Attack ship since I don't see the point in owning it, I just sell them when I get them 3x so far). I have paid $0 USD on keys and just use ingame currency to buy keys for the boxes. Think I've opened around 300 total and gotten all the ship and everything from the lobi store.

Its a free to paly game... this is one way people can help keep the game gonig and growing if they like, otherwise the Zen store has lots of other things for you, none of its pay to win as all of its tradable and ends up on the in game auction house. To be honest I am a life time subber from late beta and get zen every month so for me its just another choice to spend my 500 on or save up and get something else off the zen store.

The boxes at worst are just a bit invassive as the can drop quite often and are very in your face. But in fairness they are just a choice for the player sell them for EC on the trade network or save up Dil to buy keys or spend real world dosh and get keys to open them.

I have been a playing STO since the start, I have almost every preoder for the game, and I am currently a lifetime member with over 1000+ days of sub. Please explain to me how you have spent no money to unlock the boxes. I am only currently aware that to you need to purchase keys. And there is only two ways to get the keys. with real world money or the stipend that comes with the lifetime sub.


I am a trekkie for life but I am a little putoff with the grind that the game has become. I still love the game but I am takeing a little break. Just a little, my Romulan warbird calls to me in my dreams. Excuse mispellings.

I agree with the lockbox comment, they should lower the price of the keys.

keys have averaged around 2 mil ec for few years I believe. I buy one every blue moon, but I no longer farm anything and resent the thought of grinding in this game. Usually I get a key or 2 just for the lobi since odds getting anything good are ridunkulous. Its more often people sell the 10 pack keys for some quick ec. And all of you talking how much you spent and own make me sick! LOL JK OAI?

Is it possable to Earn the ships you would get in the boxes in the game? If so please tell me what missions etc. that you can earn the ships.

I have a budget I have to deal with so my bills and important stuff comes first,so pretty much no money for ingame store stuff :( Wish you could earn the keys instead of buying them off of the store :(

Earning anythign in STO is an odd experience, you are paying for everything somehow. Box ships get moved to the Lobi store 'sometimes' which is the general sink hole for all the crystals you collect form the hundreds of boxes you have to open to get anything worth while. The Lobi soter is also a rip off and the items offered change at the whim of Managemetn.

Buy keys off the exchange. EC costs $0 USD and is insanely easy to make enmasse if you know what you're doing.
