Dreadlocks and Afro's
Hello! Hello! Hello!
Just so that EVERYONE is AWARE....BLACK PEOPLE play STAR TREK online.....lots of us in fact.... oh yes we do. And like everything else in this world we appear to be either an after thought or an oversight or some BAD MEMORY that needs to be moved on from.

All this being said we soldier on and ....I guess...have a dream....keep hope alive and all that stuff. We get into MMO and we love Star Trek. We create avatars only to experience exclusion when we cant select BLACK peoples hairstyle...you know..the natural ones like DREAD LOCKS and of course Afro's.

Oddly Afra-centric hairstylse are missing or, in the case of the receeding hairline dreads given to the Klingons, unacceptable.

Even the Alien template has more variations than the African Human in this Star Trek Universe...OMG. Shamefull.
So much for Roddenbury's vision of INCLUSION for ALL species huh? No Afro's or FULL head of dread locks.

Afterthought? Oversight? Who knows?

Luckily this hasnt stopped us black folk from playing this game, but could you imagine how grateful those of us who WANT this diverity would be moved by the guesture of....er instead of Wrath of Khan caucasian dreads..... you actualy created African Dreads......just an idea.

Whatchyall Think?

Post this in the official STO forums you'll probably get the Dev's attn.

I think hairstyles are inadequate as a whole, especially with the KDF faction. What is there is relatively faithful to the franchise, but to say it is stifling would be an understatement.

I don't, however, think it is some conspiracy against anyone or any group of people. There aren't any wavy masculine medium to long hair styles(King Arthur, Jesus, etc.); there aren't any long, straight, asian themed haircuts; no braids or 'exotic' hair styles that twist and tie ♥♥♥♥ into all manner of shapes; no wildly unkempt hair that looks like it suddenly exploded out of the skull; the list goes on.

Afros and dreadlocks? In a military setting? Yeah, right, they're cut that right off your head before you even realized it was gone.

Intersting replies. Im really greatfull. I guess I struck a nerve by speaking in what is being recieved as conspiratol tones. On the contary. I am merely pointing out the fact that this is a common problem in most games. Those of us who seek AVATARS are dismayed that we can not USE our own RACIAL traits and COMMON hairstyles.

@dygerger7 thanks for the tip.

@Szeron...very interesting. I would argue that ASIAN hair is the same texture as Caucasian hair and therefore in game terms ASIAN hairstyle can at leats get in the BALL PARK.....funny how you dont hear too many Asian people complaining how they are being mis-represented in this GENRE...only Matrix gets any Kudos for dilivering satisfaction to ALL races. Hey they even gave the White Twins Dreads....look at that.. But I digress...Im not asking for Star Trek to exclusively tackle this problem nor am I requesting that they incorporate EVERY known Afriacentric or TRIBAL hairstyle. I just want Dreads and Afro's...they are somewhat exclusive to MY race and quite common WORLD WIDE. Are Black people exotic? I guess thats a compliment somehow but we feel were are NORMAL people who eat sleep and drink sci-fi just like any one else....to ask for better representation is to court conspiracy....oh my forgive my asenine nature.

@Melvin, the Lord of Darkness.....YOU POOR THING. Star Trek is NOT a military game, setting, apple pear or turnip. There is no-military game called Star Trek. You must have the wrong game...LOL..poor kid Star Trek...hahah...military setting....what jokes..

Thanks for ALL of your replies. I hope no offense was taken.
Live long and prosper.
Yanno, It's probably down to the fact there's dresscode and such .. I find there's not many good hairstyles at all, but even watching Star Trek, everything from TOS, to Enterprise, they all have the same up-do's
Menace Mar 1, 2014 @ 10:36pm
white people like to eat chicken, but I dont see any KFC's in the game? whats up with that?

Yup. The Federation is distinctly military, with specific influence from the Navy.

Actually the more common hairstyles amongst black men would be either fades or shaved. Despite what you must believe (You must be very sheltered) afros and dreadlocks are not the only hairstyles amongst black people, nor the most common.

No I'm NOT sheltred young man. I am a black man . I have lived in America, Jamaica and Africa in my long blessed life.. I have dreadlocks. I didnt say that afro's and dreads are THE most common....I said they WERE common wich should qualify them as NOT exotic. Nor did I say they were the only hairstyles. COMMON and POPULAR have different context in THIS particular discussion.....i dont know....yeah...dog poo is COMMON on the street(epspecially in LONDON--even with the law against it.) and lets say...I dont know ...FOOTBALL is POPULAR because its loved by millions.. or lets say its common for people to ..I dont know get up and do domestics but its not the popular thing to do...who likes doing the dishes(this is really directed at Mr " WHITE PEOPLE LIKE Chicken")forgive me if thats not clear to you.

You are infact correct about the shaven head styles but these styles are UNIVERSAL...they have nothing to do with ethnicity.
Asian, Black and White young men all have theses styles. Its only BLACK people or people of mixed heritage that can produce Afro hair...the texture, not the DISCO FEVER style which everyone seems to think this black man is talking about (typical).

No not the Bob Marley dreads nor the 70's Michael Jackson afro eitherr. I wonder if the fact that I have to explain the difference is indicative of the biased mentality ALWAYS adopted by detractors...but any way ..... oops..conspiraycy...LMAO.

Whose the CHICKEN eating guy anyway?...go get some....lol.

Look..I didnt mean to upset you but the theme for STAR TREK is NOT "focused" on millitary. Even if it is, it is wrong to assume that ALL people of the world would agree that having a "short back and sides" is appropiate or that somehow it looks more professional. Very Western veiw...quite.. COLONIAL view. ( A soldier is a kiling machine...what the hell has hair got to do with his attitude to following orders and killing ...really?...Please.)

This is planet Earth is it not. Not Planet USA or Planet UK...or Planet Europe....or Even Planet Australia or Planet South Africa(perish the thought.) The rest of the world counts...and just because ethnic people are minorities in the aformentioned countires...doesnt make MY comments any more or less valid.

There is this stance that Eurocentric views are the norm world wide.....not so...
It is very Eurocentric and Imperial/Colonial to assume that IF HUMANITY were to Unite that these views would still be...STANDARD.....and shared by all..

Also ...who soley plays the game as aFederation operative. I play Klingons, Romulans and Remans. Except for Klingons I wouldnt dream of giving a Romulan dreads (maybe a tightly curled close cropped look...heh heh.) and I do "darken the skins as I feel to....

You notice how Im not complaining about how ...you cant get black...Vulcans..Romulans ..Remans .Klingons..Jem Hadar...because you can.....Whats so wrong about a dam Afro(non 1970's disco jammy) or dreads of varying lengths when you give this access....Im confused.

The real thing is...OTHER GAMES ....GTA...SAINTS ROW.cover this "glitch".....just to mention TWO other grat sellers...oh wait ...I get it now...those are GANGSTER GAMES....and everybody knows its only BLACK PEOPLE that do gangs right? TIC LMAF...

Star Fleet incorporates Aliens with wild hair, eyes, mouths and ridiculous clothing...but you want to heckle the black man who would like more DIVERSITY for his avatar...well thank you.

Im actually about to edit a Duty officer and I see that Gothic Long hair is selectable...I guess Gothic hairstyles are more acceptable/common/popular than non-receeding Dreads or a proper HI-Top (not talking about the original 80's or 90's hip hop cut either)..I never knew...I'm sooooo SHELTERED.....LOL LOL L....O...L... military environment....omg..short hair more...not any long girly hairstyles for men....really?... popular..lol...nonsense....

Amazing. I'm black. I' have dreads. My two sons have dreads. My daughter has a short fro. Ive lived all over the word. Somehow me observing that black peoples hairstyle are absent brought about claims of....there is no conspiracy....to white people eat chicken...Im sheltered.....Wow. In all my 50 years Ive never imagined how little regard there is in the world for INCLUSION and diversity. Whenever black people ask questions people always assume theres some hidden agenda or veild racial quip behind it. Trust me I'm just a blkack 50yr old sci-fi fan who is disappointed that to ask this simple question created such EXCLUSIVE and flippant remarks.

Plain and simple...OVERSIGHT.....AFTERTHOUGHT.....and not a damn thing to do with "white people liking chicken too" either.....Im out.Peace.

I just watned to play STO not have deep thoughts about suppressed racial animus. That is a small thing but a thing none the less. I would suggest you post it to the official thread and see what sort of response the Dev's give you. I would really like to know their response.

I think in all honestly, it was a time frame, laziness issue. Now the game has a new home, I think they could find the time to load some new textures and meshes for the fans that keep the game alive and fun. See you in the world.

I was going to argue your points, but I'm going to let Dave Chapelle do it for me:

OMG you've heard of Dave Chapelle. Eat at your local KFC does he...Lord of Darkness...lol...You have issues with chicken get Dave to sort it out for you. You're living a hard life...Im soo sorry. Lord of Darkness.....Did you rally think much about that name...hold on....of course not. You compare a black man complaining about GAME issues to White people eating KFC. Then bring Dave Chappelle into the mesh. The truth is you would probably answer if you could ARTICULATE beyond your brainless KFC eating mode.....go back to the game..

.PLEASE DONT REPLY.....please.
