"Get 'em Captain Kirk!" says willbill961.
"Set phasers to stun!" shouts Captain Kirk.
*Captain Kirk aims at the nearest Star Trek Online player and begins firing phaser shots.*
"Get every last one of 'em! These guys are trying to prevent me from getting my new ship" utters willbill961.
*Captain Kirk sets the phaser to kill and begins mercilessly slaughtering Star Trek Online players with his phaser blasts.*
"There is another one over there! He is hiding behind those Kilngons!" yells willbill961.
*Captain Kirk aims at the Star Trek Online player hiding behind the Klingons and snuffs him out with a phaser blast.*
"It looks like we killed all of the Star Trek Online players. What do you suppose we do now?" inquires Captain Kirk.
"Time to get to work. That new ship is not going to earn itself!" replies willbill961.

If you're referring to the one I started the other thread about, it's the Mirror Universe one. You need to do one of the mirror universe tasks (as listed in the blog I linked and also in the event window in-game) once per day for 20 days while the event is active.
The last day that you can start and still have time to finish, if my math is correct, is next Friday (the 24th).
----
Oh and if you are brand new, I would highly recommend that (even if it is not your primary character) you make a TOS character and advance them through the tutorial and the first story arc (until you reach the modern era) prior to the recruitment event ending (on the 7th).
----
There is not a permanently available, free, T6 ship. (In comparison to the free T1 through T5 ships you will be given as you level up, and an additional T3 you can get as a storyline reward.) They are only available via special events.
Play the game. If you care very much about DPS make sure you are playing a Romulan/Tactical captain. Otherwise any combo of race and captain will do. Play the episodes, some are very good. When you reach 50, if the event is still going on and you have the money to buy out the ship (I wouldnt, the regular Gagarin is bounds better imho) go ahead and do that. Otherwise, keep playing to 65.
Once finished, figure out what you think about the game. If you want to continue playing you should figure out a few things. Why you enjoy the game is first because you do not need much to play 90% of the games content. You could actually do it in a t5 tbh if your gear is up to snuff. This way you do not need to spend a dime. If you care about DPS or playing advanced or mainly, elite.....prepare to spend, possibly 500USD and up to get to the meta in your chosen profession/play style.
Also, carriers can be fun and also powerful on the base settings. But as the difficulty goes up their power goes down. Also, the traits used to make fighters and sometimes, frigates, useful (alive for more than a few seconds) are very expensive and can only be gained realistically with RL money. And even when you do, carriers are in a horrific place DPS wise since they nerfed a trait named Superior Area Denial. It is just not worth focusing on carriers in todays game.
Beam dps is probably the cheapest and easiest way to do damage. Cannon dps is higher than beams but requires a few traits and one very expensive one only found on a promo ship ( if you want to use cannon rapid fire). Cannon builds trend torwards scatter volley and are AoE. Science DPS is potent right now in the game but requires RL money traits to be useful for DPS (imp grav well is the primary culprit). Sci becomes even more effictive when combined with torpedo's. And currently, the top end DPS in the game are Torpedo boats which also need a few pay traits.
Now, you see I write about DPS a lot. And its for this reason. Unless you are playing elite TFO's you and your group will have no need for tanks/healers or Debuffers. Sure, those things help when present. But for 95% of the content, DPS is king.
Either way, I love this game. You may to. I just wanted to give you some advice you may not hear from others. Play the game, find out what you enjoy and go with that. For most content a good t5 with good gear can do the content. But come winter you will have a chance at whatever free t6 comes around.
You are probably, as others have said, going to miss this one.
Claim the free mirror gear in the promotions tab of the zen store.
