A Step Between Stars: fork in the road

A Step Between Stars has a fork in the road: after "Space" (the exploded part) you can either go to a room where you help Dr. Cooper and protect him from Swarmers or a room where you have to restore the shields and hide from the intense sunlight. My question is: what determines where you go? It SEEMS it's how you treat Dr. Cooper (nice = help and protect him, mean = broken solar shields), but I wanted some confirmation about what exactly does it.

No, it's random. Really dosen't matter what dialog options you choose it's always a 50/50 chance which path you'll have to take.
The road you take also has no influence to anything happening further down the mission, so essentially it really dosen't matter which room you get sent in.
