Star Trek Online

STO not starting in Windows 10, why?
I recently installed Windows 10 to my computer, at first I was hesitant because I thought that my computer wouldn't be able to play my games, but after reading a subreddit saying that STO worked perfectly on Windows 10 I decided to go ahead with it. I installed Windows 10 and went ahead and played some of my other games first, and they worked flawlessly, with occasional but rare FPS drops, not too much to ruin my experience, but when I try to start STO, I get a notification saying that the display driver has crashed and has been recovered right after the Star Trek Online: Delta Rising screen and it just freezes. I don't understand why this is happening, the game worked flawlessly on Windows 7 with medium settings, I could play high but the effects cause some fps drops. So why is this? I tried verifying the cache with Steam, which I later found out to be completely useless, I tried putting in a command to force the game to start using DirectX 9 (my computer has DirectX 10.1), all that's left is to try running it in safe mode which i haven't tried yet. I was also told that going into the game's PREF file and modifying the game's graphical settings could help, but I see no need to do this when my game runs at 60 fps at medium settings. This is exactly what I was afraid would happen when I upgraded to Windows 10, I just don't understand why I can play my other games but not the one game I wanted to play, STO. Are there any possible reasons or solutions? I really wanna play the game guys...
*EDIT* I seem to have found a possible reason why the game doesn't work. Here's my theory: Windows 10 doesn't seem to "like" it when I change my game's graphical settings. For instance, when I tried running the game normally, it failed and gave me a notification that the display driver has crashed and was recovered, but when I started it safe mode, which sets all of your graphical settings back to the lowest settings the first time you use it, the game worked perfectly. When I logged in with safe mode the first time, I had set the graphical settings back to my prefered quota and the game still worked well, however today when I tried logging in with safe mode, it failed same as when I tried regular mode yesterday. Windows 10 seems to have some problems with STO's graphical settings unless they're set to the lowest setting. Unfortuntely for me, I've already set both regular and safe mode to medium settings meaning Windows isn't gonna let me log back in to the game. Is there any way around this? I heard that there was a .PREF file that allows you to edit the game's graphics from outside of the game itself and I found it, but I don't wanna go willy-nilly setting everything on there to 0 without knowing what I'm messing with. Is there any other way around this weird Windows 10 graphical settings problem?
*LATER EDIT* I was able to pull a clever trick on Windows 10, what I ended up doing was, I rolled back to Windows 7, logged into STO, changed the graphical settings to the lowest settings, saved those settings, and re-installed Windows 10, now the game works on 10 just with low settings rather than my prefered medium settings. I can deal with it being in low setting for now, I'll just have to wait until the devs address this problem and fix the game or until I find out why this happening to only me, because everyone I ask in-game tell me that the game works perfectly for them in Windows 10
*EDIT* Forget that, it failed again with the same message. I know what the problem is for sure now, though. My graphics card manufacturer, AMD, released Windows 10 updates all the way down to their 5000 series Radeon HD graphical card, just my luck, I have a 4000 series Radeon HD graphics card, so there's really nothing I can do. It doesn't matter anymore though, since I'm getting a new computer soon

Not worth using win10 at this time on main gaming rig imo. Give it a bit more time mate.

It depends if you are unlucky enough to have issues, for me the transition to Windows 10 was painless, and I have yet to encounter any compatibility issues.

OK i keep hearing all these problems with windows 10, but why is happening to me on windows 8, when previously i could run it with no issue. i ran it on my old laptop that is 5+ years old with windows 7, also on my new laptop that has the specks of a 3-4 yr old gaming PC. Now all of a sudden it stopped running and tells me "display driver has crashed". even tryed uninstalling it from steam and using arc but it still happens. Of course now that i know it has nothing to do with the game its self i am redownloading it on steam. thats why i am on here asking for help. sorry if i sound a little comp. dumb, but well, i am.

The short answer is probably your graphics drivers. While I have no issues with STO, Eve, and several other MMO's on Windows 10, Star Wars TOR has issues with it. All issues are in the graphics drivers.

I figured out what the real problem is, every AMD graphics card got a driver update for windows 10 but those ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at AMD only released Windows 10 updates all the way down to their 5000 series video cards, I have a 4000 series card so there's really nothing I can do. I'm about to get another computer anyway so it doesn't really matter anymore

When you do an upgrade from Windows 7/8.1 etc. you need to reinstall direcX and Microsoft visual C++. Download DirectX Redist 2010 and vcredist_x64 from microsofts site. STO can run stable under windows 10.

If you are using the STO game client from Steam, you are asking for problems. I have no problems with running the STO website game client on Windows 8 and Windows 10.

You could try setting windows compatibility mode for the game client. right click on the game launcher while in file explorer window of the game folder. Go download the latest Window 10 graphics driver from your graphic card provider website. Make sure you are installing and running STO on an Admin account. Make sure STO is always using Dx 9 for its graphic display .

Oh yeah, the OP figured out he needs a new graphics card, AMD didn't have Win10 drivers for his graphics card.

Running Windows 10 on an older computer that was designed only for window 7 or Vista is also a bad idea.

I run STO fine on a Stock HP computer using Windows 10 64bit, after upgrading from the original Win 8. My computer has AMD processor and AMD processor Graphics.

Again, it is just luck. As devs said, the game is NOT compatible with windows 10 yet. Some users can run the game without problems. Others just cant. It is what it is. Stop saying that "the game runs perfectly fine in windows 10" because you are promoving other users to change so just because you said so. I know only a child would do that, but i noticed that there are too many childs around.. xD, so... please dont.

I'm 36, so no child here. I came with a valid answer and a solution. People can run STO under windows 10, some people can't. Those that can't need to look at their system. Graphic card brand can also be a problem. Nivida vs AMD.

Upgrade to windows 10, then do a fresh install of windows 10 by running the windows 10 setup from a USB drive. Also malicious programs can affect system performace, so a fresh windows 10 install can affect the runability of STO. And as others have said, compatility mode.

Also some people can run windows 10 perfectly on old laptops and 5-6 year old PC's. So whatever reason a program can't run under an operating system is multifactored. It can be hardware, it can be software, it can be something on your PC that affects your ability to run that program, it can be a combination of both hardware and software.

nope, it was the graphics card that's having a problem, AMD released Windows 10 updates all the way down to their 5000 series graphics card, I have a 4000 series graphics card so that's the problem. Plus, I had other games which require Redists and DirectX and I didn't need to reinstall either of those, that solution doesn't really apply to everyone, you know...

what's wierd though, is that I actually tried compatability mode the first time I got Windows 10 and it worked but when I tried it again, I even rolled back to 7 then reinstalled 10, it didn't work. It's weird that it worked that once but won't work again no matter what I try. Eh, I'm about to get a new PC anyway so it's not too much of a big deal anymore

windows 10 was kinda unstable when it first was released but since hence has been updated and fixed alot of problems i run fine on windows 10, i believe at first release there was a small bit of support for processors and graphic cards which could of been your problem but things have had major improvements.

I have win 10 64bit build 14295.rs1_release 160318-1628. I am a member of microsoft insiders and niether Arc, nor StarTrek Online is compatible with it. I've jumped through all the hoops to work with it. The first release of win 10 ran it ok. the very latest updates -no-go. The bloggers who claim it has to be operator error or such because their win10 runs it "just fine" are shortsighted idiots not because they think it should work fine in win10, not even because they may not be up-to-date with all the elements of the problem, but because they flippantly dismiss the person honestly seeking answers with thier ignorance of the problem. my solution for now?
Write a help ticket through Arc's error prone webform submission process, wait three months while researching the problem, uninstaal and submit the reasons for doing so in detail, wait 3 months, move on to other games (NOT Perfect World or ARC), better yet, participate in much more productive and educational pursuits! I chose the latter.
