Issues with (melee) combat..
This is probably a pretty easy problem but I'm still a newbie at this game, so...
I been having problems in battle. and by that, I mean that when I'm holding a batleth, I can't do any attacks with it, and I never had this problem until today, but the arrow keys just change my pov of my character, instead of doing combos. I challenged someone to a battle and got destroyed because I couldn't attack. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Am fairly certain you use the 1 and 2 keys in order to make bat'leth strikes, and basically doing combos with that is how it works.

I'll try that, thanks

Equip your batleth, ready weapon in ground mode, press P key to read your ground skills, your three melee attack skills should have auto place themselves in 1, 2, 3. There is a combo system for melee weapons. All those basic attacks are Expose attacks. The Batleth Chop is your Exploit attack. Check here for info http://sto.gamepedia.com/Klingon_Bat'leth

Try a sword as well! I find the bat'leth and vulcan weapon are very clunky and immobile. The sword is aaaawesome. You can move while swinging it and it's 1 is an auto charge gap closer.

The sword feels so unrealistic to me. It doesnt eve look like a sword. I prefer by far a battlech or a lurpa.

To the op, melee is not really recommended in this game unless you want to spend 2 hours killing 3 npcs using hypos all the time and having a really frustrating experience. Melee weapons in this game look cool, but in general terms they are useless (unless you consider "fun" to try to kill 3 npcs that are constantly going away from you while you are trying to keep your health high using a million of hypos). Trust me. The melee system in this game (also, because who will want to use melee weapons when you can use energy weapons lol, you will be always in disadvantaje) is a no no (not to mention all the problems related with melee weapons/attacks).

learn the right combos and use shooter mode to solve most of that O_o . Sword and martial arts have easily spammable AOE expose attacks that ignore 80% of shields and do great damage. Try 121 on sword for instance. Playing in shooter mode lets you easily keep up with the enemies that keep trying to move back. Do NOT try to melee in RPG mode, it is god awful. You'll never hit anything as it will constantly back up and the RPG mode takes forever to register the melee attacks. Enter shooter mode and your right/left click become attack and you can just constantly chase with ZERO time to register attacks.

Also keep in mind if you want to focus on melee, you need to gear that way. Armor and such that gives + physical damage is great, and being a tactical officer helps a lot too as they can specialize in it as well as get melee kit moves.

edit* Also check into the lobi crystal sword. It absorbs energy attacks and releases them back at people. Also the trait for +15% physical damage and +15% melee knockback chance :)

Ive been playing the game since beta dude... and i have 3 melee focused characters.. lol. If you cant see why melee is a no no in this game.. you are completely lost lol. Why i would use shooter mode in a melee character?? lol, i think you are talking about something else. Shooter mode will never "help" you with anything, specially in melee combat. Its as awful as normal mode, escapes me why you think shooter mode is "better" than normal mode for melee lol. I tried it for an entire year, and it was terrible.

I can assume you never tried a melee character in the kobali battlezone.. xD. Or in dyson. I really doubt you will be using melee characters there lol. Well, unless you want other players to laugh at your face...

And why will someone want to "cheat" using shooter mode in melee combat?? lol, if you need to do that, just dont play melee combat, it makes no sense. The thing about npcs going away is a COMPLTELY NORMAL thing that should happen in every single case of melee combat and in every single videogame. Im not tlaking about that, im talking about the way the game is designed, using combat melee is stupid and non sense. It was never going to be introduced in the game, but since battlechs for example are canon, they needed to. But the devs said that melee combat will be really pointless at most. That was 5 years ago. And nothing changed lol.

I dont have any problems with armor / skills or watever. But chasing the npcs one after another is just moronic lol. And using 3 times more the time to kill any npc than using energy weapons in this game is a terrible mistake.

been playing since beta as well, lifetime subbed and pre-ordered when the game was firt announced. I melee everywhere. And why would you use shooter mode? Because its 100x better for melee. It's absolute ♥♥♥♥ for actually SHOOTING, but for melee it makes it a ton easier.

I'm not going to argue with some random person over it on a steam forum. OP, I suggest you at least try what I've said and make your own decisions. Never take someones word without testing it for yourself, or you'll never know :) Youll aslo find "3x slower" is nowhere near right, and most mobs you kill -faster- with melee. But you also get into some stick situations.

Try pushing 'b' key to switch to target mode, then run up to your target and click away using your mouse. Just keep clicking that bat'leth.

I had a different problem. When I entered the embassy in "The Kuvah'Mah" story mission my bat'leth disappeared. I found it was now my secondary weapon. I tried in vain to switch it to main with no luck.

See the action here:

Melee weapons might be a joke, but those Martial Arts attacks that the Tac toons get are almost OP, especially against the Borg - they don't adapt to Melee Combat.

Stand in the right place, and you can take down a whole Defera borg group (i.e. Save a Deferi) with 3 button presses. I've NEVER been that powerful with ranged weapons in the game, EVER. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. Whatever.

Point is: Melee Weapons come a very distant second to Tac Melee Attacks.

I also have Melee-focused characters, and only one of them ALSO uses a melee weapon. Even then, it's secondary - my internet cnx simply isn't good enough to be able to nail the combo I want every time, so why even bother?

LUNGE is more important than a good melee weapon, in my experience. Does spike damage AND moves you around the battlefield. Win win!

That is very useful information Hero' . I understand the fun one can have with combos, I can never coordinate my fingers to push the right buttons at the right time, I like to just go in and slice and hack. Close and personal is the way I roll.

It all boils down to the fact that every individual has a particular goal in this game. Some seek fame and fortune, others seek scientific discoveries, still others, like me, just want to battle all day and night. Fight, fight fight! :)

tbh in my years playing this game ground combat really needs a redo plain and simple it tries to be a shooter+mmo and to me it just doesnt work all that well.
