Slow Patching Speeds
Hello and good evening to everyone. STO's patch servers seem to be really slow. I'm getting 1/15 of a megabyte every second. This is unacceptable for a game that needs constant patching. Is there a possible fix?

Sure. 20mbit download (not a lot) I don't think it's my problem. Cryptic needs to upgrade their servers or some ♥♥♥♥, this doesn't make a good impression on anyone.

What you are describing is not on cryptics end, it is your connection, I have seen this before with some players, try rebooting your pc, try shutting down any torrent or other internet browsers you have open,

Everythings closed. Steam downloads halted. Nothing is using any of my network. Everything else -- even when I download things from Steam, is 100 times faster than this. It's not my end, and I am sure of it.

Turn off on-demand patching from the launcher options (unless you're low on HD space), that'll mean you won't need to download levels with every map change.

Same.

The issue isn't neccessarily Cryptic's servers, it could be any of the networks between you and their server, there are programs out there that let you trace your route, I would suggest trying one to see where exactly the problem lies.

So many games take the flak for a problem that they can't do anything about, and connection speeds is the most common one.

And I just noticed that the thread was a year old and had been "necroed"

It could be just about anything, to be honest. I have the same problem sometimes, where the patching will stall out, then suddenly speed up again 5-10 minutes later. Pain in the butt. I just dun play if I'm not in the mood :D

It could be what the players above have alraedy stated, or it could just be the weather inbetween the sender and reciever towers as the signal gets sent and recieved in the Satallite. Atmospheric pressure changes are an internet nightmare, but we've learnt to adapt the signals to over come them in time. I don't think I've ever seen another mmo that has the problem this bad though, ever :D

It's almost certainly on their end. But it seems even worse when you are used to the quality and speed of Steam, Origin, or Blizzard.

Steam has nothing to do with anything.. either Origin does. Those are just back-ends, nothing more. You can be playing a steam game with terrible quality connection and another one with a good one. That is up to the company who host the servers and the infrastructure. In this case, pwe/cryptic.

Honestly speaking it might not have anything to do with your ISP, or Cryptic's ISP/infrastructure, there are so many varibles that can slow down internet, and the US is kinda infamous for having unreliable ISPs and throttled speeds, it's a wonder it even works.

Edit: just realised how old this thread is, lol people just love to search for (nearly) 2 year old threads to necro.

For the same reason you just bumped it again: Because I felt like it.
