Though you might have to do it once per faction, not sure about that.
You get some very usefull things after completing the tutorial vs. skipping and just setteling for the consolation pack, not to forget about, all the shooting is fun and essential training. Extra skill-points, a better set of equipment to start with (free Mk II shields and phasers).
I don't know how adept you are at playing games, but this is unlike any gaming experience I have ever known. I recommend learning everything you possibly can about shields, beams, consoles, and everything associated with rigging your ship.
Finding a helpful fleet can be difficult/down to luck but most certainly makes it easier to ask questions, as zone/local chat attracts trolls (as it does in any online forum).
