If you're trying to mail it to yourself that only works on unbound items - have to use the account bank to transfer it between characters.
Once applied the upgrade should be account-wide for whatever ship you apply it to. If you apply it to a Vengeance on one character, other Vengeances on your account will be upgradeable to T6-X.
There's really no reason for be that complicated. The exchange ship you upgrade on whatever character is using it, and the zen ship you upgrade on any character that happens to be using it. If you re-claim the zen ship on another character later it will already be upgraded because the upgrade makes the specific ship class upgraded on the entire account.
It will account-unlock the upgrade on the ship-type it is used on.
To clarify and correct...
The upgrade does NOT automatically apply itself to copies of the same ship-type on other characters (whether they are active, or are claimed later).
However, once you have upgraded a ship, if you then attempt to upgrade an identical ship, its upgrade will be free.
For example, let's say you upgrade an Andorian Thozyn Escort... then switch toons and claim an Andorian Thozyn Escort... it will not be upgraded already, but upgrading it will not require a token.
The source of the ship (whether it's a lockbox ship, promo ship, fleet ship, event ship, zen store ship...) makes no difference. (Though note that fleet ships and legendary ships are considered to be separate ships from their zen store, event, promo, or other versions.)
Correct - unless it is wanted for a ship that is not account-unlock itself, there would be no need to transfer the token.
To clarify though, the token doesn't actually unlock the extra slots on "all ships of that type account wide"... you still have to upgrade each ship individually. Just that the upgrade on the second, third, etc ships of the same type, will not require another token.
account-unlocked ships and C-store ships, sure, but 'free' TX'ing lobi/box ships seems like the antithesis of cryptic's aggressive monetization scheme
i don't doubt that it works, i just find it mildly surprising
Because Fed alt uses the Kelvin Intel Dreadnought and upgraded it to X.. Then my KDF Recruit bought one during the last Lobi sale and it was upgraded. But I did have to visit the NPC ship selecter though to click on the upgrade to activate it and apply what Starship trait it will use..

Which if i give any of Alt's the Na'Qjej Intel Battlecruiser that my Main Character uses it will also come already upgraded already..
i'm just expressing my surprise that the 'single-use' ships, as it were, wouldn't be exempt from the rule
I'm not... in a way it encourages you to get the ship.
