there is a bridge officer ability that drains shields. tachyon beam. if none of your officers have it you can use a manual to teach it.

You can also use some command boff seat ability (overwhelm emitters?) that drains a percent of enemy shields while restoring yours. Tachyon beam seems to be less useful at higher levels based on what other people have said to me.

I dunno, i really dig my Tachyon Beams, maybe not for engineer or science but for muh tacticool toons i really dig it. I put tach 3 and a tach 2 up on my board alongside rapid cans 3 and 2 and I'm a firin' muh 5 dhc lazers with a 6th LAZER from muh tachyon beam! Whooo Hooo! Also, you've got to love the way when you're pulling a 180 to come around for another strafe how popping a tach then points right at the baddie and leads you in to your new vector. Maybe i'm doing elite wrong but they sure make my life easier.

I wouldn't know. You got a lot of skill points and consoles in drain stats? That could be why it's not really working for me. Okay, maybe I lied a bit. Seems to work decent on very low level enemies but for higher level enemies like the Borg Assimilator it's only a tickle.

Shield draining is not really a thing that actually is effective. Because you're not just draining from 100-0... you are also fighting against their regeneration... and at the same time the target is also shooting at you....

It's decent as a way of slowing down your enemy's ability to counter-heal, but it's not a primary weapon.

You don't "buy a ship with armor".... you can get armor consoles to put on your existing ship, or improve it in other ways... or get a different ship... but ships don't come with built in "armor".

You can have a million hit point ship thats armored so much its obese.

Eventually thats going to zero if you are tanking a large enough cloud of enemies. Its much better to stick and move using console spaces to gain consoles that support your lethality. I am a carrier and use elite valks by a dozen or several dozen as the offensive instrument. The carriers console stuff supports the pets.

Am new to STO and I got a Romulan Republic - Star Fleet allied character -
I thought that I could unlock the "Shield Drain" skill / trait "tree" once I got to "Centurion.."
it reads that I have to be that rank as well as have 5 points..

..anyhow, it still displayed a padlock on it - on each "tree" from the "Centurion 'line' "...
and, after a bit of "binge playing" I got 9 space points saved up...

.. how to unlock?!

Ok - I got it- after completing two 'lines' in the Lieutenant section, then the Centurion section opened up

for your interests: temporal bridge officer specialization also bring shield drain abilities. also keep in mind that torpedos with kinetic damage gets a high damage penalty against shields so try using energy torpedos. for comparison: shields are around 10-15k and hull is around 100-250k. i would prefer hull damaging capabilities because hull is more to crack. only use shield draining as a science officer with high drain points otherwise useless (when ur new dont use shield drain!).

okay thanks - am liking to do it mainly for the fun of it -
and, am not expecting it to be so much of a "meta" type build ;D

To clarify here, you do not need to just "have" 5 points, but to spend 5 points.

as 14 yr admiral, dont use drain use control and placate. its weaker plus there arent many opportunities or weapons in the game for you to use it effectively.
