- At the comand line, type " dxdiag " and run the dxdiag tool to check your DirectX version and function. You might need to get a DirectX install file from Microsoft website.

If your computer cannot run Windows 10 or 11, it is Time to buy a newer computer that can.
- Use the troubleshooting compatibility options in Windows OS.
- Make sure to get your important Windows 10 or 11 updates done, it can affect STO.
- Try the lowest graphics quality level, then work your way back up the higher graphics quality choices.
- UnCheck On-Demand Patching. Just turn it off, period.
- Have you turned off On-Demand patching in the Options menu of the launcher, ticked Force-Verify, clicked Apply, then waited until the files were patched, and tried again to get into Star Trek Online.
- Pull down menu for Gameplay Proxy. There is a choice of US, EU. Maybe use EU if that is where you live nearer.
- Use Safe Mode in the STO launcher Options, when you have troubles.
- Use Force Verify in the STO launcher Options to check the files integrity in STO, when you have troubles.
- Make sure all the game's exes are in your PC's Firewall exceptions.
- Make sure your anti-malware program active defenses is not interfering with the STO game files.

- Make sure you are running STO on a supported OS ( Windows 10 or Windows 11), there is no good excuse for not upgrading to Window 10.
- Make sure you have a computer with hardware, that is higher than the Recommended requirements on the steam store page.
- Make sure you are Running STO on an 64 bit operating system. >

- Other 3rd party programs running in background can cause STO to crash, including the Arc launcher. If you have the Arc launcher on your gaming computer, uninstall it, but make it keep Arc games on. >

The current download rate is <90kB/s instead of >50mB/s (Task Manager -> Resource Monitor).
By the way, opening ports in your own router according to - https://support.arcgames.com/hc/en-us/articles/360017624014-How-do-I-configure-my-router-for-Cryptic-Studios-games - doesn't really improve things either. It just ensures that the host is accessible from the PC.
As long as Cryptic Studios doesn't fix the launcher auto-update, you don't even need to think about starting the launcher, let alone client updates or even downloading the game itself, which is known to be in the double-digit GB range.
again, we´re talking about an old f2p p2w mmo.
p2w hopefully only in a sense to make the game semi-enjoyable to play long-ish term.
i just wanted to check it out for a couple of hours and that would have been that.
this game is not morrowind, where i´m willing to spend several evenings to make ~120 mods run properly or kcd1 where i sink hundreds of hours in.
it is more on level of lord of the rings online, where i might get 40-50 hours (before the annoying f2p mmo garbage really starts to annoy me).
if it doesnt run when i click a button, it´s not worth my time.
thx for the info & troubleshooting guys, but i have 10-12 hour workdays plus weekends.
i´m not going to waste my freetime on a game that annoys me before i even started it, so stop wasting your precious time with more troubleshooting. it´s appreciated, but pointless.
the only reason i´m not going to remove this game from my library is to make it less likely that i won´t forget to not touch it again.
maybe if an update comes out (that i notice) - which makes the game playable - i give it 5 minutes tops and immediatly abort the very second it asks me to create an account (dont know if that´s the case, bc i didnt even come this far).
same thing.
the only reason i use my time to reply to you guys, is bc you spent your time here.
again, appreciated.
cheers
