Different publisher, so posting that on these forums does no good.

As to why it's not available, Activision no longer has a license to publish Star Trek games, and they are notorious for letting games sit in rights limbo instead of seeking new licensing deals to republish older titles.

Birth of a Federation is by far better than either of those...

those games are that old its probably very difficult to get them to work on a win10 system so would be no point putting them on steam.

there are many games that i played 10-15 years ago that id love to play again but they just wont work on new systems

Both of those work just fine on a modern system, and GoG releases are always fixed to work on modern systems - that's like GoG's entire business model.

It's 100% Activision and licensing. Same as Heretic 2 and Wolfenstein 2009, or Star Trek Voyager Elite Force 1 and 2. Activision, for whatever reason, is always unable or unwilling to come to agreements for releases of old licensed titles.

Sadly the best Star trek RTS is a mod right now.

Star trek Armada 3, a mod for sins of a solar empire.

Gonna guess that you don't have Stellaris nor played or seen the Mod for it called Star Trek New Horizons ?

I suspect STA3 is generally regarded as superior because Sins Rebellion (and the SOASE series in general) drops most of the economic/planetary management aspects of other RTS games, which seems to be more in line with what Armada 1 and 2 did.

To be fair, neither Stellaris nor Sins of a Solar Empire are technically RTS games, they're both 4X or Grand Strategy games with RTS combat. Sins does put more emphasis on the RTS aspect, but even the developers call it a "RT4X" hybrid-genre game. Sins is definitely closer to Armada, but it's still not quite as basic.

Both Armada games were extremely simplistic even for RTS, and nothing out there quite matches that level of simplicity.

I've played a bit of the Stellaris mod. Not too fond of Stellaris since it seems to like a lot of micromanagement.

SOASE drops most of the economic aspects of RTS games in favor of fleet management. Given what little internet research I've been able to find about the Armada games, it seems like they took along the same sort of approach as SOASE.

Hence the best Star Trek RTS being based off of the game that made me make a Steam account, and not the much newer Stellaris.

Not really, the Armada games are very simple even for the core RTS genre - they make classic Warcraft look like a deep strategic experience for the most part.

As I said, Sins is a hybrid-genre game, with about equal emphasis on RTS and 4X elements. An excellent game, but not a good comparison with non-hybrid of either genre since it eschews a lot of what the dedicated fans of each really hold as critical to those types of games.

Yeah I deleted my first post cause I wasn't happy with it. Didn't see your reply until after I had typed up the second one. My bad.

Personally one of the aspects I always liked about Sins was that it was simple enough compared to Stellaris or something.

I probably ought to try and find copies of the armada games...

Armada's level of simplicity is refreshing at times, but even as a Trek fan, I have to agree with many reviewers that it gets boring very quickly. Not as quickly as Bethesda's Star Trek Legacy, but it's not a long-terms obsessive play type of game IMO.

The problem is that people often talk about Steam and GOG, but forget that there's also MyAbandonware. And that it can be seamlessly integrated in both libraries...

you wont get any good games again aslong as sto exists some people a few years back tried to encourage them to introduce more strategy elements into the game , the arguement being STO should cater for all gaming tastes if its the only trek game that will exist . we got the admiralty . its kinda fun but after awile it lost its luster and there has been no effort since to be anything more than rpg cash shop selling lock box ships etc to milk the trek fan dry

It's also not strictly legal.

No, but that's often the problem with old games. If those who made it are unable/unwilling to put the game on Steam/GOG/whatever launcher sometimes your only recourse is to Assassin's Creed IV the game.
