Star Trek Online

ground gameplay improved?
I haven't played this game in years, but I remember the ground gameplay and combat felt pretty clunky and cheap. Have there been any improvements at all? Just wondering, as I was thinking about maybe re-downloading. Thanks in advance. :)

Still clunky and cheap, easily the worst part of the game, I avoid ground like the plague whenever I can.

But that's just my opinion as a snobby space jockey, ground is serviceable and fine for what it is and the age of the game, I just never liked it.

they could change it to a more mass effect-ish style but the engine is based on the same they use for champions online , what limits its capabilities
Not really, no. Using a bunch of pets and AOE kits negates the jank a bit but it's still the part inbetween the good stuff to me.

there were big changes when they added kits. Kits let you pick powers, many of which mimic the ones from other classes or do OP aoe bombs. So for example my science captain now lays mines down like an engineer and has a massive damage buff to her gunplay that is more of a tactical feeling ability. If you have played since the kits came out, then most of the changes are minor (eg new kit powers from box rewards etc). If you played before kits, its a lot more fun to me, but the basic game is the same as ever its just that you have more choices/toys to make it less of a chore.

IMHO, space combat is still where it's at.

To quote The Fighter Mafia: "Not a pound for ground!"

I got myself these two mark 15 rifles that I just pass around between my characters, and for the most part ground combat isn't too bad anymore. When I get into a tougher fight, I just fire off the V'ger Probes.
i admit i religiously grind events, got enough stuff to get me by now.

Yeah on my newer characters I'm just arming them with all this stuff I got from the events.

It's playable, and brainlessly easy with a good build + power creep, but I wouldn't call it fun. I walk around with my gun's primary attack on auto-fire and cycle through buttons that give passive damage boosts, and that's about it. You can get a little creative with ground traits, but not nearly as much as with space traits. In group content, it seems to be a contest of who can play with the most obnoxious and eye-searing magic spell attacks instead of shooting guns. It's straight up dungeons & dragons, except melee weapon attacks are still too slow and clunky to keep up. Which come to think of it also describes dungeons & dragons after the first couple levels.

In short, the ground combat sections shouldn't hold your game up much, but they're not a reason you'd want to play the game.
melee? theres weirdly enough a way to spam aoe combos by autofiring primary and alt fire on melee weapons since they switch at just the right time to trigger those, increases dps and onscreen speed, but movement is hard sometime bc it triggers on anything sometimes even if theres no target depending on my control setup

oddly enough, you can get a good melee build going when you can mitigate having to close the gap between you and a ranged group.
2 ground traits increase run speed , your char can offhand have a run weapon.
tac has stealth , engi has rising DR the more often hit ground trait.
sci could throw a gas at em to lower their dam and snare em.

It's not that bad. I've seen WAY worse from much newer games.
