Can't use training manual
Ok, total newbie here, and I have to say the lack of any real instructions or explanation as to whats on screen is terrible. It seems filled with little icons that are daunting to a new player.

My issue is that I bought a new training manual for my tactical officer, she is a Lieutenant and the manual is Ensign rated. Its a ground combat skill, but for some reason I can't find anything on her listing, her skills, to place it. It has a ton of space combat skills which I can learn eventually, but there is no tab to flick over to ground combat ... but she is the tactical officer, how can she not know ground combat?!

On the skills screen, the four skill slots on the right are ground skills... select the ensign level skill in that area (which will be the one on the far left) and should open up the list of skills for that slot. The skill you have the manual for should be listed in that list.

Oh, ok, so the four slots are different ranks? Would have been nice if the game tells you that!! Makes sense now I know.

On a different topic, I hope you might know the answer, kits? I got a kit from a crate that Scotty told me to grab. It's for a tactical officer which my character is, it went into the 'Kit Modules' above the character pic in status, but I can't move it from there to the kit slot on the right of the pic and its greyed out on his slots on the main screen when playing. Any ideas?

'kit modules' are items that grant active 'skills' for ground combat, like throwing a grenade (tactical), setting up a turret (engineering) or using a casting fireball (science). You can have upto 5 of these.
'kits' are items that give passive bonuses for ground combat. You can equip one of these.
