Kentari Partisan Residuum Thrower
Hi there,

I quite like the style of this weapon and the feel to it, but it is horrid when it comes to actually damaging something.
I am not well versed in all things STO and mostly just "play the game" but would quite appreciate it if anyone could give me a few tips on how to make this thing perform at least a little bit.

I quite like that it is a flamethrower type weapon, the dot aspect is also something I enjoy in most games, though I am not married to both of them.
My problem with it is that even when I stack up 10 stacks it just doesn't deal enough damage to kill regular enemies.

Yeah, its a bad weapon. Damage over time is not a big thing in STO... there are space builds that can leverage it well, but its tough to do anything with it in ground. Enemies either die quickly from your primary attack damage, or they take forever from it, but the DOT damage will be much lower than the main attack... which means they die slowwwwwwww from it, and you need to move on.

You're not going to find much in the way of flamethrowers. If you like the constant attack aspect then the piercing plasma rifle can be fun - a constant beam that ticks damage on the target rather than a series of shots like most weapons. In general, though, for most non-TFO ground content your weapon should be more AOE focused, or have such good single-target damage and a high enough firing rate that it can cycle through enemies and mulch them quickly.

My suggestion is to try "Mr. Vups Pistol" which you can get off the exchange. It sprays so much phaser in a cone that it may manage to hit that flamethrower itch... but its a very good weapon. Lots and lots of AOE, fast, fast attack rate, knockback and knockdown.

If it's free it's not meant to perform well.

There's no real way to make that weapon good - it is a slow buildup weapon and ground combat in STO overwhelmingly favours fast action. By the time you build up the needed stacks of residuum, another weapon would have wiped the entire group of enemies out.

What aspect of its "style" do you like? That its a flamethrower? That it fires a steady stream of effect at your enemy? The colour of the attack? If you get specific about what "its style" means to you, we might be able to suggest a more effective alternative. I will say, though, that there isn't a lot of flamethrowing action to be had in STO.

Thank you for the elaboration(s) and the advice, I will take a look and see if it is fun :)

it is a set item so, your best bet is to get the entire set.

This is not necessarily true.

You do not need to equip every piece of a set, and quite often the 3-piece (and 4-piece if it has one) bonuses are not worth chasing, especially if you have to equip relatively useless pieces to get them.
