Its a standard older style MMO.
Everything you need is free, all content access and plenty of equipment etc. You can buy ships and other things for money, but none of it is needed to play and succeed. It likes to drop gambling boxes in loot which cost $1 USD roughly to open.
Ground side, you have 0 to 4 officers with you who are AI controlled, and the combat is real time, third person shooter style. In ground missions you may interact with friendly people who tell you what they need done to help them, or it may just be fighting. Sometimes you are just in a meeting with other officers, or you might be rescuing people on a star base, or blowing up borg.
The game is combat heavy. It is also story rich, though some of the writing is better than other. Drama and non combat missions are rare, though. What that means is that even if you encounter drama, talking, diplomacy, etc the odds are that you will STILL end up fighting SOMEONE at some point in the mission.
you can play several factions, and minor factions inside those. The romulans (neutral and you can then ally with either kdf or fed), federation, klingons (kdf), and jem-h are all playable (JH may cost money to unlock, I forget). Each has its own unique intro but funnels into the same story arcs after about level 20.
The game is old and the UI & graphics are going to feel dated. But its still around for a reason: its pretty good with lots to do.
It costs nothing to try it out.
There are a few 'mini games', but the bulk of the game revolves around combat.
Not gonna throw out any spoilers, but the newest episode has been pretty good. The newest mission gave me CHILLS.
It's mostly micro transactions, well I say micro, it's more macro transactions, some ship or their consoles costing 100s of real money.
Maru console in Mudds store 8000 coins, that's £75 - for a console that buffs your ship at the start of a mission. Pure greed.
Can be played without spending a penny though, which I recommend you do if you want to try it. Don't give these greedy devs a penny of your money.
