What's most important to spend Zen on starting out?
I'm still fairly new to the game and very slowly collecting small amounts of Zen, I only have about 3,000 saved up right now and I just want to know what are the best things in game to spend it for a low budget player starting out like me?

I see the Risian Corvette currently on sale for 75% off, around 4k Zen. Is thing worth getting? I seem to recall hearing that it was good. Is it good for the trait, the console, or just general use?

look it up and decide for yourself. Unless its an upgraded model, the original was just a basic T5 escort. the console isn't bad, but I don't stock a lot of toys so I wouldn't personally use it. T5s don't have traits. It does have an experimental weapon, so its better than most t5s in terms of firepower. I wouldn't drop zen on it, but if you really like it, 75% off is pretty cheap.

Not really. The Corvette's trait can see some use on high speed pilot escort builds if you end up getting good at combat at high top speeds - it can replace Emergency Weapon Cycle in those builds. As a ship its so-so.

If you have the ZEN, the new Mudd bundle is insanely good compared to most bundles, but it prices out at a whopping 14,750 ZEN at 50% off. Those bundles do come back, and once or twice a year get discounted again, so if you can't easily swing the big zen cost there's no real need to stress over FOMO.

My guess is that with the new company taking control of STO, someone wanted to prove they could make money so they pushed out a better-than-normal bundle to generate some numbers. If so, it holds promise for the anniversary bundle too.

I looked it up, its a t6 copy but even at 75% off its 1200 more zen than most other ships with nothing special at all about it other than a cool look and color scheme. Most likely there are 3k ships that are as good or better left to purchase.

I despise Mudd's and everything it stands for, so my advice is just keep your FOMO in check and ignore.

Even at 75% off it feels like you are being robbed, and to this day I wish I could have words with the people signing off on this.

Mudd wasn't even a cool or interesting character, he's just an annoying ♥♥♥♥ and so are his bundles and overpriced items, many of which were free event rewards at some point.

I can understand cashing in on past rewards, but Mudd's (especially the bundles) is just so far over the line there's nothing redeeming about it.

Just one man's opinion to be sure, but there it is.

whoa its the other way around. weve been asking forever for any non random acquisition method for those meta ships. mudds is a godsend to anyone not wanting to spend 300+ ona single box ship.caveats theyre cheapest at intro. the reductions never as high again

Not all sets are worth using. The consoles from that set come from three different summer event ships, so unless you have all of them it won't matter, and only the weather ship's console has a particularly useful clicky.

The Risian Corvette is a frail (both hull and shield below a 1.0 multiplier) escort with a mediocre experimental weapon and consolr and it requires you purchase a fleet version to get the pilot maneuvers. The upcoming anniversary event gives a pilot escort if you need one.

Oh, was it actually good when you could get it for free, or why do I hear "if you didn't get it back in the day, too bad"?

It wasn't even particularly good then.

The three best of the event ships are generally the Bajoran Interceptor, Cnidarian Defender and Hysperian Battlecruiser. After that comes the alliance ships and the Compiler and the Risian Weather ship. Anything beyond that was nice to get free but definitely not worth spending on.

Of those, so far, only the Cnidarian and the Alliance ships are available via Mudd's. The Interceptor is in Phoenix.

I did get the Cnidarian Defender from the event, but I've never flown it. Is there anything special about how to build it? Kinda looks like you just fly it into enemies, turn on the jellyfish mode, and stuff dies...and it's not affected by your weapons damage?

Weapons get disabled when in jelly mode.

If you have them, any consoles that enhance Electrical or All damage will help though, which includes the ship consoles from the Terran Somerville (Ionic Deflector Inversion) and the Hysperian (Dragonsblood Flame Reactor).

The key to an effective Jellyfish build is focusing on things that can dish out damage during Defense Mode when all ship weapons are unavailable. The console deals electrical damage to 5 enemies every second and is NOT considered a ship weapon and thus is not affected by things that boost weapon damage.

Things that will add to your output during defense mode:

- Anything that boosts electrical damage.
- Anything that boosts all damage.
- Anything that increases CritH or CritD (console can crit)
- Anything that is not a weapon that can deal damage on its own.

The first two are pretty easy. For consoles you have:

Image Refractors +20% all damage (lockbox/exchange)
Ominous Device +20% all damage (temporal/MW light cruiser)
Portal Weapon +25.6% all damage (the shrike)
Dragonblood Reactor +20% bonus electrical damage (hysperian)
VHF Disruptor +17.1% electrical damage (freedom)

There are several starship traits that boost relevant damage, too, such as:

Ruin of our Enemies +3% bonus all damage on kill, stacks 100 times (D7 FDC MW)
Five Magicks +15-30% bonus electrical damage (hysperian)
Eclectic Collector of Armaments +10-20% bonus all damage (shrike)
Time to Kill +10-30% all damage (Annorax)

There are a couple of space traits that help out too, most coming from lockboxes:

Duelist's Favor +5% all damage on kill, stacks 3 times
Anchored +5% bonus all damage on not moving, stacks 4 times
Context is for Kings +1% bonus all damage per sec, stacks 10 times

There's probably other starship and space traits that apply, these are just the ones I use in my current jellyfish build. Be sure, though, that they say "all damage" full stop, not all energy damage, or all weapon damage, etc.

There's a notable specialization combo that helps dish out the damage, too, using the Miracle Worker specialization as your primary. In Tier 3 the "No Risk, No Reward II" skill can trigger from healing yourself using Defense Mode, and gives +10% bonus all damage on crit heal, stacking 3 times.

The third method is buffing your general CritH and CritD since the electrical attacks from the Cnidarian Defense console are capable of critical hits. There are a LOT of consoles out there that boost CritH or CritD, so... leverage what you've got.

Two big starship traits to consider for boosting critH are:

Terran Goodbye +5% critH and +25 acc on kill, stacks 3 times (Mirror Warship)
Universal Designs +5% critH and +10% critD on console activateion (Crossfield Refit)

The cnidarian is going to get a lot of kill shots, and UD can be triggered easily using the psychic prism console (which gets damage boosts from Five Magicks) or the VAQ torpedo console from the Texas class. People like to suggest the Immolating Phaser Lance console for it, but I'm pretty sure that needs a target, and your enemies in range are already dead.

The fourth method is anything that deals damage but isn't a weapon, such as BOFF abilities, consoles, etc. Here are a few suggestions for that:

3pc Stamets-Tilly Field Modifications set... first time you damage a target it hits them with a pretty hard blast of electrical damage. You're already boosting that, so its a good method to augment your first attack on enemies.

3pc Lorca's Ambition... fire a free dark matter torpedo at any enemy brought below 50% hull for the first time. Might not reach them in time to add to the damage, but its a torpedo which helps trigger Eclectic Collector of Armaments for another +10% cat2 damage. More likely to help directly with damage if your cnidarian build isn't super deadly yet.

Tholian Nucleating Warp Core... on every kill it spawns 1-2 tholian crystals near where the enemy died. These act as radiation mines for the next spawn in that location unless an idiot teammate runs around picking them up. Radiation damage is already being boosted by Five Magicks and all damage consoles.

Finally, an honorary mention to abilities that let your jellyfish reposition itself without turning off Defense mode. There are a few consoles and the occasional piece of normal ship equipment that will teleport you a few KM, usually to a target. What I use is the Graviton Displacer from the shran... for 10 seconds it lets you move at a pretty decent speed, so long as you accelerated to max before triggering it. Does not require any target.

Now, most people will not have all of these things - a lot of them are traits and consoles from harder to get ships and such... but its something you can build toward or pick and choose from. A good Cnidarian build is something to have in your toolbox, and can breeze you through salvage endeavors, or many TFOs, with minimal effort.

The Terran Somerville's console should also be listed (see my post above).
