Quantum Destabilizing Beam
I'm just doing some research on it to see if it would work with my DPS dreadnought, but let me just make sure I understand: it takes up three actual weapon slots?! If so, let me get further clarification: does that mean I equip it as I would any other weapon (meaning ID have to get rid of some phaser arrays)?

The Quantum Destabilizing Beam is the 3-piece clicky from the Sunrise set. As it is a set bonus, it doesn't take up any weapon slots by itself, but you do have to equip the Quantum Phase Beam Array (or DHC), the Quantum Phase Torpedo, and the Universal console in order to use it.

And you'll have to repeat Sunrise three times to get the set.

Yeah, I got that. Was just reading things and they mentioned weapon slots, so I got confused.

Another question: I'm running fleet phasers, and I know the quantum phaser does slightly less damage. But, especially with the phaser damage bonus from the console, is it really going to affect my DPS that much if I trade up?

That would probably be a quastion for the reddit.

I think the phaser damage console buffs base damage though (might be wrong).

Nah, you're not. It's the only viable way to have "Rainbow" ships - As long as the base damage type is the same, you get the benefit from tac consoles.

For example, I'm currently running my Eng cruiser build with different disruptor beam types and all disruptor tac consoles. It works.

OP:
As to the DPS, yeah well - you do get some loss with those special beams often, but the added benefits *should* make up for it. And as you say, it's not too big a loss when you have those consoles for phasers.

All that "DPS over everything" fad is just silly anyways IMO. As long as you go for the proper consoles for the proper damage type, you should be all right in all PvE situations.

Edit: When in doubt, go to a space zone (NOT sector space - Earth Spacedock is good) and unequip and reequip your phaser consoles, watching your phaser damage. I suggest looking at the icons from that HUD, not from the ship screen. The HUD icons should properly represent the current damage your weapon does, including energy levels, buffs and consoles. Note the current damage and unequip one or more consoles and give it a second to adjust the damage displayed. if it does go down, voila - you know the console affects your phaser.

But I'm 99% sure it does, just mentioning this so you can check it yourself.

Well, it says +20% phaser damage, just like the TAC consoles, so I assume it does boost my damage...

Yeah, but does it boost the weapon's base damage, or the weapon's total damage (There's a difference). I assume it buffs base damage.

And @SiriuS, I run a Dyson Science Destroyer with the quantum phase beam array, a retrofit phaser beam array, and two normal phaser beam arrays (and two torps). I know that for tac console purposes, Quantum Phase, Phaser, and Retrofit Phaser aren't different.

It *should* boost the base phaser type damage, not any secondary effects, though to be honest, not 100% sure. Would make sense though.

And yeah that's my point - if any console (not just tacs, also universal specials) show +phaser damage, it also applies to not-set phasers. I mean that the 20% from that quantum phase console should apply to all types of energy weapons that say "phaser damage" in the base type, though again I can't say for sure because I don't use it - if it doesn't, it may be an oversight in design, but I don't think so. In any case, easy to check out by doing what I described above. Check phaser damage on all beams, unequip console, check again.
