Dude, you got to read the patch notes whenever they are released.
" Captains will no longer be able to conduct trades that would cause a captain to exceed their Energy Credit limit.
Energy Credits and items gained on the exchange will now be mailed to captains to prevent any losses due to being near the energy credit limit.
Captains won’t be able to take Energy Credits from the mail if it would cause them to exceed their Energy Credit limit. "

Go and check your Mail Vendor.
And it says:
Items gained will be mailed. That means buying.
Checking the mail icon on the right isn't enough...that just lets you read the mail. To actually collect what you bought, go to a mail station (scattered throughout) and you'll be able to collect your item then. I made the same mistake today having not played in ages, no worries.
