Why it's a good idea to make multiple characters and decide which will be your main. Only buy ships and upgrade equipment on that character. Use the Alts for the daily max Dilithium accumulation (8500 if in fleet and using the 500 extra Dil mine doff mission everyday).
Alts can still use the cstore ships if same faction (except only Romulan can use Rom ships. Rom can use kdf and fed ships though). Reclaim ships in the store section when logged in with an Alt. Alts can also use crafted weapons you make, transfer back and forth with the account bank. A good idea to make one set of weapons and upgrade for all to use. Since reputation equipment costs Dil and is more expensive to upgrade, only buy them on your main.
I've broken the rule and spent on Alts, but you'll get one character fully kitted out with ships, traits, and equipment, a lot faster if you stick to it. Kdf have it a little easier with wealth accumulation because they have Marauding doff missions. Those can land you with quite a bit more contraband to sell on exchange for EC, and turn in for Dilithium. Also, save your EC (energy credits) to buy traits for your main (Ablative Shell & Repair Crews traits go a long way to help keep you alive).
You can transfer EC and crafted weapons between your characters with the account bank, so unlocking the account bank should be top priority. Seems confusing at first but, it all IS actually confusing at first!
