If the console version succeeds nothing will be shot down. Them putting significant money into 2 console versions makes me think they plan to keep the game up tbh.
This game is an MMO, it will probably stay running for quite a while on PC, even if it gets successful on console, look at Elite Dangerous, that is on both PC and console, I do not see that getting "shut down" because they just have two platforms, thats called "shooting yourself in the foot" in most places.
At the moment, they are quite desperate to generate more revenue selling OP iconic ships, that they refused to publish for years.
Now they even release a additional dominion lockbox. Sounds like the Conny wasn't that money-spinner they expected.
So, if the console version fails and does not return the investment, Cryptic could be in serious trouble and forced for moves like borg-lockbox or worse. This could scare even more people away leading to final maintenance mode of the game.
Best time to halt all purchases and wait for the console version to show results.
Oh, he must have counted my 5 million in. So expect to receive some nice dill sinks and pretty massive devaluation.
Folks will be f***ed up.
So I agree with you to take it with a grain of salt.
However, it doesn't surprise me that they are continuing to release as much paid / lockbox items as they can. Considering STO is F2P they need the small number of people who spend lots of money in STO to keep buying new things. If they think they can get people to pay for something they'll at least consider it.
It's another reason why PvP is dead (on PC at least)... people can buy zen ships or tons of lockbox keys and sell them on the exchange, then turn around and buy equipment on the exchange. You can then basically buy whatever you want, provided you don't mind using real money.
I wouldn't say PC users are "dumb" or "conformist". I think most PC players are just at the point where we know how the game works and what to expect from Cryptic. Most console users are (probably) just new to the game. Give it a few months and we'll have a better idea how STO on consoles is going.
Right now it's...odd.
For lack of a better word...it takes longer to "find" abilities you have...yet combay seems more fluid.
The duty officers system is non-existent for unknown reasons...as is the reputations for the "older" factions...like OMEGA and such.
Apart from that it's more or less the same game...random arguments about space in the chat an' all lol
I can not imagine text chatting with a controller.
Also people like the TC (whom I find it funny he has his profile set on private), speaking of "oh this game is dying/is doomed", has their profile set on private are just trolls/trash posters.
I agree... There are MMOs out there that have a lot more chance of dying off, or at least have a smaller number in regular players.
I suppose the argument can be made that Cryptic is expanding STO to the consoles to supplement a dying PC market, but I don't personally think that they would invest so much money in expanding a game that is dying. It wouldn't be worth the risk of investing all that time and money in development, testing, support, and porting.
STO isn't perfect, but it seems to be doing relatively well as far as players. It would make more sense (in my opinion) if STO has has mostly platued in adoption on the PC and they are moving to expand to other platforms to attract a different demographic (console-only gamers). I am just speculating however; I don't know if any of that is true or not.
Though more games are coming out "soon"
