Possibly also "adventure" zones for the reputation projects.
Lots of ways to "hunt ships".
I did discover patrols and this should help scratch my itch!
Yea I just started so probably cannot do endgame daily and red alerts...
But yeah, patrols: They are a bit hit and miss (some are just running around on a planet scanning crap, for example), but when you find those that basically boil down to "Kill all the enemies", write down the system - you can indefinitely repeat them, even though they are on a timer (30 minutes before you can go again? I think).
Deep Space Encounters is basically exactly what you want - they only deal with "Kill 'em all", though other players can (and likely will) join the fight.
Plus they give a "decent" amount of stuff for completion. (Well, so do the patrols usually).
Important to note is this:
Regardless how much you grind DSEs and Patrols, in the end you will be forced to play a few episodes to level up - Don't think you can grind to the endgame by ignoring those.
I mean you technically CAN, but that would take an appropriate fraction of "forever".
If you want to do just space fights, consider investing in Albetive Hull Armors. They really cut down on the damage you take. They are a good general Engineer console item that adds resistance to most ship wepaons you encounter. There are platings which give beffer defence but inly against certain types.
Yes DSE's are for hunting ships exclusively, but I have to say the new systems of that stuff popping up and then out again before you get there is nerve-wreckingly stupid.
Well, one can mark down the spots and hang around there, if one is so inclined.
Yes, many of the more "interesting" things one can do to pass the time requires a somewhat high level.
Still, you can go hunting ships pretty much throughout the whole leveling process, after a minimum and more diversity towards maximum level.
Edit: And NO, I would really not recommend leveling up all the way by doing those things.
Again, while technically possible, I don't want to know how long that would take.
