Just want to hunt ships...
Are there places for a new player to just earn some money/parts by hunting ships? I just wanna fight ships without going through missions at the moment.
Are there any random skirmish areas available? Or do you only have to do story missions?

Also try some of the Deep Space Encounters in sector space.

Deep Space encounters, Patrol missions (Just steer at random systems and see if a "Patrol" mission pops up - Or read the Wiki about where the good patrol spots are), later towards endgame the Daily missions and Red Alerts.

Possibly also "adventure" zones for the reputation projects.

Lots of ways to "hunt ships".

Thanks guys... not sure the foundry is just hunting, played one and it was heavy story, good but not what I was looking for.

I did discover patrols and this should help scratch my itch!
Yea I just started so probably cannot do endgame daily and red alerts...

That's why I said "later, towards the endgame". ;)

But yeah, patrols: They are a bit hit and miss (some are just running around on a planet scanning crap, for example), but when you find those that basically boil down to "Kill all the enemies", write down the system - you can indefinitely repeat them, even though they are on a timer (30 minutes before you can go again? I think).

Deep Space Encounters is basically exactly what you want - they only deal with "Kill 'em all", though other players can (and likely will) join the fight.

Plus they give a "decent" amount of stuff for completion. (Well, so do the patrols usually).

Important to note is this:
Regardless how much you grind DSEs and Patrols, in the end you will be forced to play a few episodes to level up - Don't think you can grind to the endgame by ignoring those.
I mean you technically CAN, but that would take an appropriate fraction of "forever".

Just a tip:

If you want to do just space fights, consider investing in Albetive Hull Armors. They really cut down on the damage you take. They are a good general Engineer console item that adds resistance to most ship wepaons you encounter. There are platings which give beffer defence but inly against certain types.

Also, except for the Romulan Patrol Missions and the Delta Quadrant missions, I believe you can only do a single patrol mission once. Someone correct me if that's no longer the case.
Talon Sep 18, 2016 @ 7:23pm
I believe you're correct in terms of the original system patrol missions but you can make it nearly to level 50 just by doing those.

I rarely do patrols nowadays, Starfleet or otherwise, but I'm pretty certain I never encountered a "one-off" patrol. Then again, as I said, I don't give too much attention to those, so I'll happily admit that this might be wrong.

Yes DSE's are for hunting ships exclusively, but I have to say the new systems of that stuff popping up and then out again before you get there is nerve-wreckingly stupid.
Well, one can mark down the spots and hang around there, if one is so inclined.

Yes, many of the more "interesting" things one can do to pass the time requires a somewhat high level.

Still, you can go hunting ships pretty much throughout the whole leveling process, after a minimum and more diversity towards maximum level.

Edit: And NO, I would really not recommend leveling up all the way by doing those things.
Again, while technically possible, I don't want to know how long that would take.

No you cant. Not anymore, since a long long time ago. Most patrol missions can only be done just once. And once you reach level 40+ the exp they give you is totally worthless.
Given I just did so last week with my new AoY character I'd have to say you're wrong. I didn't even finish the Klingon War arc until I was already at 50.

well that sucks, so are there no random battles in this game then? everything is story mission or patrol until they are gone?
The old patrols used to be just here is a ton of enemies, have fun deal, unfortunetly they mostly removed that. (Also they used to respawn very quickly)

You have the battlezones, yes. They're kind of space capture the flag style. For the space ones there are the Voth Battlezone in the Dyson Sphere, Undine Battlezone in fluidic space and Badlands Battlezone. The Badlands is from lvl 60, not sure about the others. You get ore if you win before the timer resets the zone

The Voth and Undine Battlezones are in the Dyson Sphere and are level 50+ only I believe.
