Make alts and refine on them, you can even transfer refined ore between toons by making offers to buy well below the current value (say 100 per zen for PC) cancelling the offer, then withdrawing on the char you want the ore on.

Also, Veterans / Lifetime members get a special duty officer mission to refine 1000 ore over 2 days if i remember correctly.

8000 seems like so little.... I have been palying for 2 months and have well over 200k raw dil waiting to be refined. The rate at which one gains raw dil far exceeds the rate at which it can be refined.

I can understand them wanting to limit the ability to refine Dil, because it detracts from their ability to make money (somewhat, as someone still needs to buy the Zen) but when so much in the game uses it, it really limits what one can do within a reasonable amount of time.

The situation is relatively frustrating for a new player.

If you use alts like Arendey said, 8000 is more than enough - especially when you have to grind that amount on each character in the first place (unless you happen to finish an event, which usually gives 30k or so, or finish a rep, which also gives a around that IIRC).

In any case, it will mount up quickly, especially if you are careful what to spend it on.
Be very sure what you spend it on, and you shouldn't have any problems with Dil shortages.

Worked for me at least. I have my three main toons decked out, and now the stuff just accumulates. Then again, I don't have the OCD to HAVE to have my gear at Epic level, but I do have everything worthwhile in XIV. Big savings right there.

Thinking about just letting it mount up for a while, then waiting for a "good" Zen exchange value to get myself a new ship or two.

Point is, use alts, invest a bit of time, and after w hile you won't know what to do with your refined Dil.

I don't think it is good game design if alts are needed to "keep up". I guess I'll just fall behind, as I refuse to start up alt accounts just to cope. A game ought to be playable with a single character on an account.

Would one not also need an account bank to make your plan work? That's almost a full month's worth of Dil to establish. With current rates (415:1) that's about 19-20 Zen a day.

And what if I start /playing/ on those alts? Gaining dil. Just setting myself further behind. I do not comprehend the logic to your plan. You have taken a /game/ and made a /job/ out of it.

I just want to play the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game.

You don't exactly need to "keep it up" with alts. Just one toon is just fine too, it just takes a while longer then. On the plus side, you won't have to grind the same thing with several toons.

The reps alone give you rather huge amounts when finished, and it's good practice to finish them all, except maybe if you really hate a certain rep. Take advantage of the events, though that gets boring fast too when you have to do the same fricking missin each day for two weeks.

But in the end, yes, this is the thing that you can shortcut with real money, the grind way simply takes time - This is a F2P MMO after all.

It could be much, much worse.

I you are that much into STO that you play long term, you WILL get the dil you need.
If you get bored after a few weeks, you don't need the dil anyway.

As to the account bank, no. You use the little trick that has been explained.
You go to the Zen / Dil exchange tab, set your refined dil to a price that won't be bought (100 is usually good), then immediately revoke the listing - the Dil now sits in your account, so to speak, not on your toon. you can take out the dil you want with another toon on the same account.

This works for Zen too. Zen/Dil has nothing to do with the account bank.

Edit: And again, be mindful for what you spend your dil. Some things you simply don't need.
Rep sets are hilariously expensive dil-wise compared to the fleet stuff, which is generally superior. So keep away from those if you have trouble getting the dil up.

It's a no brainer to take a 12k Fleet Cred 12k Dil shield over a 32k Dil shield from a rep set, at least IMO. If you really want the Repo sets, install the Tribble server - you can get all the rep stuff for "free" by going to a certain console on a certain station. Test them out, and see if it's worth grindin the dil for on your actual Holodeck account.
Google for the Tribble server and how to install / unlock it and transfer your toon(s).

But what I'm saying is, play long and hard and only get stuff for dil when you are sure you want that - if you do that, even the dil grind is bearable. it will still take time, but again: You are playing a F2P MMO, and a pretty moderate one when it comes to free user restrictions.

Even subcribers can only refine 1000 or so more per day - not a huge advantage.

The game was made to be a long term kind of thing and probably had people who were generally in work themselves when making. You don't really gotta do it all at once. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the rid. My only major irk is that by the time I have enough refined dilithium for one item, I'll already levelled enough to have the next level or two above it. I miss the old R&D system, in which I could just make my own items whenever the heck I liked :D Now it's more of a pain in the ass crack >.>

If they reallllllly wanted to make some money they'd have some of quarks... 'special' *wiggles my brow* holosuits for... a slightly more mature clientel. A few Katarian green skins here and a few bolian blue tipples there. Kirk would approve (at least on the Katarians).
VizonGaming Oct 12, 2016 @ 7:18am
Also, be mindful that you can easily spend your dilithium on other things, such as upgrading items. Once you start doing that, you'll blow through your dilithium EXTREMELY quickly. Trust me on this one. Suddenly you'll realize that you need all of that saved up unrefined dilithium and just how valuable it is to have so much so soon. So my advice is the same as everyone else: relax, take your time to enjoy playing through the storyline, and stop trying to get your super ship right away. If you play through enough missions, you will get some valuable equipment for your ship build anyway. Relax, take it easy. Don't be in such a rush. The game's not going anywhere.

Iz cool, we fellow players understand your frustration :D the solution is to find a good and active fleet :D things flow quicker that way.
