Solanae Dyson Sphere - Tower Control
So how the hell do you actually complete this thing?

I've spent hours just flying around watching other players destroy fleets of enemy ships, then waiting for timers to run down until the next fleet appears...rinse and repeat.

According to the mission description I'm meant to protect some towers from Voth ships...but there are no markers except the big arrow that marks where the Voth ships will appear from.

Also the progress bar never seems to shift from 0%. I have absolutely no idea what I'm meant to be doing to complete this mission and I'm getting bored as hell just flying around, occasionally getting a shot at an enemy ship, then waiting for the next batch to show up.

Wanted to drop this mission just so I could do something interesting, but the game won't let you skip it for some reason.

There should be four towers on the map - one roughly in each direction from the central spire - where small groups of Voth ships appear. (Not the big "timered" fleet.)

What you're supposed to do is destroy ten of those ships.

I don't think I've encountered that particular mission...at least I'm not sure. I have done the mission where you have to capture several towers, activating some device within them, while holding off Voth ships. I forget how many there were. Might've been more than 4.

I've done this one 2 or 3 times but the mission log doesn't seem to update.

This is one other frustrating thing about the game. For most missions it leads you by the hand through childishly simple tasks. But for a few its bewilderingly complicated and doesn't give you nearly enough info on what you should be doing. Or more specifically, with the Dyson Sphere missions it bombards you with way too much info, telling you about every mission available as you fly through it.

drop it, get it back, try again. It sounds like its gotten into a bad state.
As for the tower control, it is supposed to do something if you hold all 4 for some amount of time. Usually not enough ppl and one flips and resets it over and over, making it nothing but a farm for the people with the daily destroy voth ships random mission.

The reason the mission log "isn't updating" is because you're doing the wrong thing.

From the description you're giving, I'm wondering if you're on the right map - are you getting Voth ships around those towers? Or Undine ships?

Hint: The Undine Battlezone has nine control zones, marked on the map. The Voth one has four, with status bars.

While that is correct, the "Tower Control" personal mission can be completed in that state and doesn't require triggering the massive fleet.

Thanks - that could be it. Some times there are very few other players around and sometimes quite a few. I've noticed there are also what seem to be bot allies as well (no player names over the ships). Can't remember if they follow you around. Will check next time.

I haven't come across a Voth Battlezone - only the Undine one. The mission options I usually see in the bottom right are Hail Joint Command, Undine Battlezone or Ground Battlezone.

The Voth Battlezone is the Contested Zone or where the ground battle is. When you first enter Dyson Solenea sphere you have a choice of Ground battle or Space battle in Undine zone. Take ground battle transport then return to ship to do the Voth space battlezone. Tower Control is where you destroy Voth ships around the 4 towers in the Voth space battlezone. You can also enter the Contested zone by flying past the Mine field and to the right side of map on the first space zone

That would be why then - you need to be in the Voth space battlezone, NOT the Undine one, to complete "Tower Control".

There's two ways to get there - you can either fly to it (the edge of the "main" Dyson Sphere map near the minefield/barrier wall, and then a map transfer, like if you fly to the beta/alpha quadrant border), or as mentioned in the previous comment, go to the ground battlezone and then beam up.
