Star Trek Online
Any graphic update planned for the future?
That, even Star trek lower decks looks better. Love the game.. but it is awfully out of date.

Now that they have removed support for Win 7 and many of the older GPUs they can look into updating the graphics but I think that they may be a bit limited by the current engine for the game for the time being.
they cant charge you 200 dollars for zen to buy the graphic update, so probably not
Just in case you don't know: They already do update the graphics, but it's slow and buggy, presumably because the engine is old and coders that were involved 3 or 8 years (or whenever) ago and left along the way didn't document what they did so it's a literal coin toss if upgrading something won't break something else.

For example, the lighting engine got updated, and at least one area in one episode is unplayable due to severe glitches with the lighting there, for the longest time the only workaround is to turn it off in the options for that area.

Several hairs (and I believe faces, bodies and uniforms) have been upgraded a good bit already - but also with the drawback of several uniform parts now being glitchy or not working correctly AFAIK mostly about reputation outfits.

Just recently the starship explosions got overhauled. There are other things here and there not immediately obvious unless you know where to look, and yes there are a lot of areas left to improve, if that's even at all possible.

But it will never be 'as easy as' just porting to a newer, better engine.
Not gonna happen.
Mainly because no one knows how certain things work (just look at parts of the game that don't exactly work right anymore, like the DOFF mission updates across the old sectors that are now not there anymore - you have to twiddle around, knowing where those lines are, and be ready to stop when it updates or it updates right back. At least that's how it was the last time I bothered with DOFF missions).

Bottom line, there's only so much you can do under such circumstances, and they are (slowly) doing it.

That's a damn shame. Some key elements of the game are so good even Blizzard copied DOFF.
I'm happy with what I've gotten these last 12 years.

And we all know how hinky stuff gets when you mess with the programming.

the people making the game it's all there fault they spend more time making crap to sell people then making sure the game runs well.

the other problem is them taking 6 to 8 months to release a single story mission then waiting 6 to 8 months for the next one and so forth i end up not playing for 2 years or more just so i have stuff to do when i come back.

They do piecemeal updates: A ship or two here, a zone there, a hairstyle update when they add new npcs, etc. One day you log in and ship explosions look way better than they used to, and then you quickly forget that they ever looked like anything else.

There's never going to be a full graphical engine overhaul though. This is a 2010 game built on top of a 2009 game, with archaeological layers of code piled on code, a massive asset library, and way too small a dev team now to work on such a big project. They'd have to hire a bunch of new people, train them up, and then probably fire them all as soon as the project was complete because the business model wouldn't support sustaining that large a dev team.

That's not going to happen. With that sort of investment, they'd be better off making a new game entirely. And that new game wouldn't be a Star Trek MMORPG, because that would compete with one of their already existing products. This is a problem inherent to the games-as-service model in which the game just keeps getting updated and is never "finished." The only way the game ends is if it fails, in which case nobody will want to make a new one. But if it doesn't fail, they still won't want to make a new one, because the old one is still profitable and making a new one would be a risk.

I grew up with TNG. And all Star Trek shows made after Voyager, be is J.J. Movies or Lower Decks to Picard. Are all well done, are true Star Trek and have done nothing but kept it alive. After like 12 years of nothing.

I grew up with Original series on TV and then TNG and all the others. I love star trek and if people complains means they are more fans than most, because that's what star trek is about... to make progress, surpass, to become a better version of yourself.

Of course... some people take it to the edges, but that's humanity for you.

Yeap, this engine still has some ommph left in it which is now no longer held back by the millstone of ancient OS, so i expect to see some new bells and whistles appear at some point. :)
I want to see them add RTX lighting. With all the different coloured weapons it would look glorious :D
i mean if you look at some key designs now, graphics actually are improving. a good example is, look at avenger against arbiter, then arbiter and avenger against inquiry.

inquiry is massively more detailed and that reflects the graphical direction of the game. there are a lot of other ships where this is an example, where they have been remastered. ie brel.

similarly on ground, there are certain newer hairstyles that are better looking and more detailed, like the long+wavy one.

Well all that is now possible, so you never know. ;)

Lower decks is a lot worse than STO. However, yes, STO is starting to look a bit dated. That stated, it's not the worst game out there graphically, not by a long shot. At least this games graphics aren't meant to fit 200p screen resolutions and CGA graphics.
