Goodbye Star Trek Online
I love Star Trek, and this game has years of great memories for me. It's sad, but since they no longer support Windows 7, I won't be able to play the game any longer. Hopefully they release a Linux version of the game.

I won't be 'downgrading' to the newer versions of Windows. I have used the newer versions of Windows and... let's just say you won't catch me paying a cent for them. If anyone knows of ways to run STO on Linux or if the devs ;) would like to create a Linux friendly release I would be ecstatic to know more.

Notwithstanding you wouldn't have to play for Win10 or Win11 anyway (the free upgrade is still available), it's unlikely Linux will be officially supported.

STO had a Mac version but that went under when the company that maintained the wrapper died. You might be able to play through Proton, but it won't be officially supported.

Just upgrade to 10, it's not worse it's an App platform so takes a bit of work from the user to get it to a point it has enough new features to be better.

Proton exists and you can play it through that.

Windows 10 takes some adjustment and annoyance, but it isn't that big a leap

Well... it's a goodbye for me as well. Glad I got the newest ship in time before this stupidity happened. I'm curious how big a hit they'll take on the dwindling player-count and how fast it gets reversed. Until then "See you space cowboy!"

Probably none. Win7 has a .21% usage rate among Steam users per the Steam Hardware Survey. Not gonna be worth supporting those using a past-End-of-Life OS at this point.

They dropped support for it because it'd still require supporting DX10, which they're also dropping support for as well (Windows 8 and up by default use DX11 so it's not an issue with those OSs).

linux isn't particularly arduous to use as a daily driver, it's just that - and speaking as somebody who put a fair amount of effort into doing so - using it for gaming is generally inadvisable if you can in any way avoid it

Hello all of you folks in same predicament as me.
I am playing STO since free lunch.
I have an older Desktop system I use (dell Precision 490).
I have windows 7 Ultimate/Enterprise installed - and have 2(too) much data to start now risking it for a update.
(I use to be a win8 beta tester and had major data failour issues so I am not going back to that fiasco nor win10 I work daily basis fixing stupid auto updates.)
I talked to a few people and in the end my personal solution is this (will be doing it tomorrow or a few days from now) :
_ as I cannot touch disks nor I want to (they are all full) I won*t do anything to my system.
I will not even bother changing hdd for a new drive & new os.
-Tomorrow or whenever I get around , I will work hard in backing up 32gb of data from a flash drive (thumb drive) ,
- Quick format the 32gb thumb drive to NTFS,
- Lunch my x64 bit OS DVD i have (not decided on version , win8 or 8.1 or 10 erlyer editions).
-Install the Windows x64 bit fresh on USB 32gb flash drive
-boot from flash drive
-Lunch the Win x64 , finish install , activate , clean up the win to bare minimum
-install GPU AMD Crinsom driver and wifi i use recently (after they cut my old UTP cable dam unsolicitated upgrades.)
-disable anything I don*t need (like paging files or hibernation and other stuff) , setup as if it was a SSD.
-Lunch the STO from my current place or lunch steam and then sto. (on main drive)
And hope for the best. *(you can use new SSD or external enclosure instead of thumb/flash drive).
- Best Wishes to all.

(I tried fake reg-editing win7 but no luck).
sad part is I already have DX11 and x64 OS.... dam vultures....

Currently I dont have any other viable solutions. even this solution will take most of my day.

(down-side you need to boot of USB flash when you want to play sto , but its acceptable.) new flash unit is cheap these days.

M$ ended support for win7 on January 14, 2020
at some point, its time to move on. I feel you .. i have 2 moving boxes of dos and 32bit win software that won't run anymore. It may be possible to find hacks and work around tricks but in the end ... some stuff stops working forever and some stuff won't work until you upgrade.

its a matter of perspective, what is not broken don-t fix it. (why do i need new if I have old working unit?) evrybody is on eco-hype , so why do I need to make E-waste? aniway its a PC you should be able to use it aniway with anything , programming that*s whats menth for. TOOL to EXPAND your MIND.
