The D'Dedrix is pretty slow at turning so if you like a fast twisty turning dogfight type of combat it's not going to do it for you. Once away from the various warbird style of Rom ships I was pretty disappointed.
Any of the ships will handle the next 10 levels of combat so none are better than the others in that respect, it all comes down to you.
For me at that point, I went with the Galaxy and the Warbird.
Even if you end up not enjoying the playstyle, you'll get to ditch it in ten levels, and they've made it such that you level very, very quickly so you can get into their end game activities.
Yeah, the Captain (Commander?) level is a HUGE break from the rest of the Romulan ships. I had gotten used in prior runthoughs to the Fed's broadside cruisers, so the D'Diridex was not that out of the ordinary. Of course, in my current play I ended up running five levels with the D'Diridex and then dropping it in favor of the Romulan carrier (RP'd it was captured mostly completed by the Republic and given to you as a gift for lobbing the head off the Tal Shiar).
