Star Trek Online

My biography is too long!
I honestly didn't know there was a text limit on the biography. I got my Klingon Starfleet captain's biography up to when he was given command of the USS Galaxy...then I ran out of space before I could give a quote by Jean-Luc! I am rather disappointed.

I suppose I'll have to limit my in-game RPing to ship names and walking everywhere. I'm hoping I can CTRL+C the biography out of the game because I am honestly pleased with my writing so far and would like to keep it (and actually FINISH it too).

I started playing when the game first came out and honestly never knew there even was a Bio area.

I'm a menu explorer and found it pretty quickly (I also am quite addicted to making sure my character's rank is accurate). I had written some pretty involved biographies in the past, but this was the first one to hit the character limit.

I usually write bios too, but I keep it to four paragraphs or so.

The bio section is reserved for rabid narcissists who imagine that anyone cares about their RP. The same folks who would have foundry questions but would preface them with statements like "I don't want to reveal too much about my story because I don't want anyone to copy it..."

I promise you... nobody has read your bio all the way through. If you've been playing for ten years then you can count the number of people who barely skimmed it on one hand, and even then it was only because they were incredibly bored at the time.

You know what dude, I don't give a flying ♥♥♥♥ if anybody's read it. I write it for the same reason why I walk everywhere, (mostly) follow uniform code, name my ships (if at all possible) after ones that actually appeared in the Star Trek universe, and generally behave like an actual Starfleet officer would: because I LIKE it.

I don't care if you don't like it. I like it and that's all that matters to me.

So are you going to post the biography so we can read it?

Well, if you insist. Just as a note as it's not clear: this is a Klingon captain in Starfleet. Here's as far as I got before running out of space (with the addition of the unfinished Picard quote):

Torak "Zefram" Cochrane was certainly one of the more pivotal figures in the conflicts of the early 25th century. It has been suggested that the entire Federation of Planets and perhaps even the Klingon Defence Force both survived the turbulent times mostly due to Torak's efforts, although later in his life the somewhat reclusive admiral has regularly downplayed his part in the conflicts.

Torak was born at an unknown period in the late 24th century to unknown parents at an unknown location. In fact, even the boy's name was not entirely known as he was left abandoned on Drozana station with the name "Torak" hastily scribbled on a torn piece of paper pinned to his shirt. He was rescued from potential servitude to the station's Ferengi management by a pair of passing Human asteroid prospectors: Pamela and Justin Cochrane.

Torak grew up surrounded by worn equipment and patchwork fixes and found at a young age he had a knack for keeping machinery operational long past its recommended replacement date. However, the life of an asteroid prospector was not one for children, no matter how skilled with machinery, so the couple eventually decided to send the bright but lonely child to live with some of their relatives in Ireland in an attempt to give the Klingon some semblance of a normal life.

Human school did not serve Torak as well as was hoped, however. The Klingon was fiercely loyal to his adopted family, but the youth towered over his classmates and was seen by many as a bit of a bully. He got into many fights mostly due to his difficulty interpreting any emotion other than anger. He was shuffled from one school to another, until ultimately there was no other school in the region who would accept him. It seemed the young, bright, but troubled Klingon was walking a dark path.

The Cochrane's tried one last hope. After pooling what money they could they hired a half-human half-Klingon tutor named Kargath to help Torak both understand his Klingon emotions and heritage as well as to navigate human society in a more peaceful and constructive way. This was ultimately the turning point in Torak's life, although he would not realize this for some time. Kargath helped the troubled youth understand the near constant rage he felt inside him and how to channel it into more constructive paths. After learning about his childhood in the asteroids Kargath re-introduced Torak to the concepts of engineering and taught him about the most famous of the Cochrane's, Zefram Cochrane. Torak became enraptured with the creation of the first warp drive and the flight of the Phoenix and, while his adopted family was not decended from the famous engineer, he felt a kinship. He ended up adopting the middle name of "Zefram" as a badge of honor.

The now much calmer and more thoughtful Klingon youth ended up becoming well known in his high school region as somewhat of an engineering and robotics savant and won many awards for his creations. During his senior year he secured a spot in the Starfleet Academy's class of 2409 as an engineering cadet and, while he was still troubled by occasional fights and a degree of difficulty adjusting to a "normal" human life, both his adopted parents Pamela and Justin as well as Kargath attended Torak's high school graduation. While Torak never saw Kargath after that day, long after he retired as a fleet admiral Torak held nothing but honor and admiration for the man who turned the troubled Klingon's life around.

He soon however faced further challenges in Star Fleet Academy. The alliance between the Federation and the KDF was breaking down by this point and old prejudices had been slowly seeping into normal life. Klingon cadets had become quite scarse and the handful who went through the school were viewed as dangerous bullies and hotheaded barbarians. While most students were quite unwilling to risk coming to blows with the formittable Klingons, Torak faced a considerable amount of covert, and often overt, fear and suspicion. In his early years he made few friends and threw himself into his school work, ultimately rising to near the top of his engineering classmates in scores. Eventually, his classmates started noticing that this Klingon did not fit the stereotype and while he was never the center of attention, in later years he ended up with a tight-knit group of close friends.

His academy career culminated with the last ill-fated voyage of Captain Taggart and the USS Provence, which much has already been written. This was Torak's first trial by fire and while he later had certain criticisms of his actions, it was his leadership combined with the skills of his friends from the academy that ultimately led to victory over a superior Klingon foe.

Relief was short lived, however, as immediately afterward the USS Provence along with the battlecruiser USS Chimera, which had been sent to escort the cadets back to Earth, and the USS Khitomer came under fire by a borg invasion force. After fending off the attack the USS Provence was sent to the nearby Vega colony. They arrived just before the Borg and were instrumental in assisting the evacuation as well as setting up a makeshift warning beacon to keep trade traffic away. So while Vega was ultimately lost to the Borg, due to the actions of Torak and the crew of the USS Provence much of the colony was successfully evacuated.

However the Klingon ambush and the later actions against the Borg turned out to be too much for the already aging training cruiser. Damage to one of the ship's main pylons caused an entire warp nacelle to break away from the ship during warp and only the quick actions of the crew averted complete disaster. The USS Provence was towed back to Earth spacedock and was deemed irreparable.

The now Lieutenant Torak and his crew were given a personal commendation by Fleet Admiral Jorel Quinn for "extreme bravery and resourcefulness in the face of almost overwhelming odds." Unfortunately, while Lt Torak and Admiral Quinn were both eager to get the newly minted captain back into a starship, it wasn't until several weeks had passed before that could be arranged.

The ship that was finally made available was the illustrious USS Eagle (NCC-956). She was the oldest member of the Federation Navy Reserve Fleet and was actually one of the last surviving pre-refit Constitution-class cruisers available outside of museums. However, she had been completely refurbished and deemed space-worthy with as much updating of equipment and weaponry as time allowed. The ship had its quirks, however. "The replicators wouldn't work at the same time as the warp drive so we had to stop every so often during long voyages so the crew could eat." The admiral commented in his book "Dealing with Disaster." "The antique computer still had some traces of the original Andorian adaptations as well. I remember having to occasionally interpret a badly translated Andorian to English phrase. It made using some of the lounge facilities a highly questionable affair."

Even with such antiquated technology the crew of the USS Eagle served with distinction and resourcefulness, thwarting a Klingon plot to use an ancient superweapon against the Federation and even heading off a direct assault on the planet Vulcan by the vengeance-fueled Romulan Empress Sela. However, the rigors on a ship serving far beyond her years was starting to take its toll. Thus, it was decided to recall Torak and the USS Eagle back to Earth Spacedock. The USS Eagle had gotten a reputation as a bit of a "lucky ship" by this point, so there was debate on what to do with her. Eventually, though, it was decided to finally give the ship her long overdue refit. Thus the USS Eagle has the distinction of both being the longest serving Constitution-class and the last of her class to be refitted. Curiously, there was little work done to the bridge itself and the USS Eagle kept her original pre-refit bridge through her final retirement.

After the unveiling of the Undine influence the hot war between the Federation and the Klingon Defence Force cooled a bit as diplomats attempted to heal the breach between the two forces. Thus a bit of pressure was taken off of the Federation Navy for a time. Captains were rotated and ships referbished and repaired. It was at this time decided that the USS Eage would be taken off front line duty and recomissioned as a training vessel. Now Commander Torak and his crew were assigned another phoenix-like ship: the USS Ahwahnee (NCC 73620) one of the only survivors of the battle of Wolf 359. She had sustained heavy damage and the loss of her entire crew, but she was later salvaged and rebuilt. She had been serving with distinction on the Federation-Klingon front line but was overdue for a referb. At the same time, Commander Taplain was also overdue for a rotation Earth-side and thus the command was given to the up-and-coming Klingon commander.

It was assumed Commander Torak's assignment to Bajor would be a bit of a rest, however it turned out to not be the case. After unraveling a plot by the Cardassian True Way, in collaboration with the Terran Empire of the mirror universe, to retake control of Bajor the commander was whisked back to the Beta sector to defend against a reemergent Borg. Only due to Torak's quick thinking and his brave crew was Starfleet able to gain ground against the horror of the Borg. The resulting expedition into fluidic space by a fleet of veteran captains had been studied at the academy ever since. The humble admiral only wrote later that "the Borg were quite possibly the most stubborn enemy I had ever met."

Soon afterward Torak was promoted to the rank of Captain and given command of one of his more famous craft: the USS Galaxy (NCC-70637). She had always been somewhat overshadowed by her more famous sister the USS Enterprise, but she proved to be quite capable in her own right even with a slightly less legendary captain. However, Jean-Luc Picard himself once wrote he "regretted not serving alongside Captain Torak."

Just one problem, money isn't supposed to exist for humans in the Star Trek universe.

Hmm, you're right. I'll have to revisit that. That's something I hadn't thought of.

EDIT: have they eliminated money completely or rather eliminated poverty?

Well we're supposed to have eliminated money (as well as poverty and greed stated in TOS and TNG) - however currency has to exist (at least in the DS9 universe) because of Quarks bar, did you know he has an ATM, although it was never filmed in an episode.

lol, just a bit nerdy huh.

I thought my character had a long bio, but you got me beat, they have a few things in common though ;)

Supposedly money isn't used in the Federation because you can basically replicate anything you want/need.

There is however money in use outside the Federation.

Yeah, back in high school we were supposed to do a writing portfolio as part of our senior year. They were supposed to be anonymous, but since mine included a 35-page novella about pirates it was pretty obvious which one was mine.
