How do I team up and play?

I have been playing through the game for a while now and mostly on my own. I got invited to a fleet a while back which I accepted but membership seems to be all there is here. There is no group task or fleet v fleet engagements. I figured out how to contribute dilithium for rewards but thats about it.
Is there somewhere Im supposed to go to join missions with my fleet cause this is an MMO and yet I cant find anyone to play with lol

You can join randoms or you can form relationships with players. STO Reddit has some guilds that are more "active", however this game is quite literally not very group friendly in terms of interactions beyond socializing outside of TFOs. The primary reason for this is, there simply isn't any "need" for defined rolls. This is more like a space ARPG with Multiplayer.

You could "Pug IT" and just play your story missions to level up, and be one of player types whom never says a word to other players in TFO's (even when they were clearly carried by other players), Sector space or at locations...
Sadly with STO being quite Soloable nowadays, the player base has become rather anti-social, each mostly just doing whatever it they need to do to reach whatever goals they have in the game..

But...
You could use Zone chat to introduce yourself to whatever players are in that area at the time, ask if anyone would be interested in playing either Story missions or TFO's with you..
There's more often times that there are 2 outwardly nice peeps who will be helpful and nice for every 5 trolls that might say "trollish" nonsense (just don't pay them any heed, they just suck at playing STO and have nothing better to do then speak ill of others and random things/events in the zone chats)...

You could also use Zone Chat to find a fleet to join... You'll want one with active players who interact with the other members of course.. Not a simple thing to find that is, but there are fleets out i'm sure..
