Comparing items
Just restarted - I never had a high level anyway - and I'd like someone to tell me if I am right with the two items I compare:

Torpedo:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2577912403

  • 2k damage every 6 seconds
  • 2k damage every 15 seconds + "Hargh'peng Radiation" (whatever that is)

It seems to me that the first choice is way better. But the "worse" torpedo is priced with 3k when the "better" torpedo is priced with 2k. So do I see things wrong? Is the "Hargh'peng Torpedo Launcher the better one? If so, why?

Weapon:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2577912454

  • White Pistol MK II: 61 DPS
  • Green Rifle MK I: 52 DPS

Is the "more DPS -> better" thinking right? Is the white pistol the clear winner here?

The pistols dps is better due to it's rate of fire, but the rifle has more range; depends if you want to run and gun or drop kit AOE's on them with a few pot shots from the rifle. Also there's a shooter mode you'd want a rifle for to just crouch down and plink at the baddies.

Thanks!

So the Hargh'peng Torpedo Launcher isn't worth keeping around after that one mission? I should just discard it?

Funny thing is, I got it AFTER the mission as reward for destroying that gigantic doomsday weapon which could only be destroyed from the front.

The prices are not a reasonable guide.

I will say this though: the game sometimes doesn't display stats properly if you are not in the proper environment.

For space weapons, you need to be in a space area that is combat-enabled (which interstellar space is not). In your pics you were in a planetary orbit map, so you are good.

For ground weapons, you need to be on the ground, so the numbers you are seeing in that second pic may not be accurate numbers.

That said, if you see "DPS" labeled, that number (if seen in the proper environment) is a good measuring device.

ALSO... since you are new... there is a lot of synergy in STO, especially in space: let's take for example if you are comparing a green phaser array and a blue disruptor array of the same mark level... all else being equal the disruptor would have higher stats. (All the energy types use the same damage scale). However, if your build has +Phaser Damage boosts on it, the phaser array could wind up being boosted to higher than the disruptor, so in that case the phaser would become the better weapon due to synergy, even though it's of a lower color.

you'll fight more Doomsday Devices off and on, store the Hargh'Peng on one of your parked ships although every time I've needed it it was still mothballed on muh parked ships, lolz. If you've ditched it don't sweat it, they'll give you more.

You will Never need the Hargh'Peng torpedo for Doomsday devices. The TFO that has you fighting a Doomsday device does not let the torpedo work and the only other mission with one in it, the torpedo don't work. Both of those missions has other ways that kill the doomsday device that are baked into the plot. If you see the Doomsday device in the Kobayashi Maru TFO it is just there as an limited time hazard event. The torpedo has a Very long cooldown compared to other torpedo, so that can make

Pistol have a faster recharge time for their attacks but at a shorter range. The rifle has a slower recharge time than the pistol, but at increase of range. It is your job to take advantage of the rate of fire, by pressing the key faster. Also the Mk 2 common will be always marginally better than common MK 1 items, rarity give a slight improvement added to the mark level of attack.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, I've had those stupid things squirreled away on ships on all my alts never having them ready to use when needed to find out they're no good. What the hell is the point of those things then, lolz.

Are there any vendors that pay more for stuff I sell them? Or is money plentiful enough in the endgame that I shouldn't worry about this?

Also, how do you tell if something is worth keeping to sell on the exchange, as opposed to simply discarding?
Running-Target Aug 22, 2021 @ 2:51pm
Sell ship gear and everything else to the Ship Gear Vendors or Bartenders, you get a better amount of EC verses selling it using the recycler or any other vendors.

This. Most vendors pay 40% of listed EC value; these specific ones go to 50%

As for what is worth keeping to sell on exchange... you can always compare to items on the exchange, but the answer to that is generally nothing you get in loot, with the possible exceptions of purple quality items and BOFFs.
delta Aug 22, 2021 @ 6:38pm
Oh yeah, what do I do with all these extra boffs I've got? Just discard anything that isn't purple? And what about tribbles...is breeding higher tier tribbles worth doing or can I sell them...or just feed them all to my cannibal tribble?

Up to you on tribbles.

As for BOFFs - the critical part with BOFFs is their traits, not their color. Most BOFFs worth keeping are either blue or purple, though. This would best be discussed separately. (I have taken the liberty to start a separate thread on that.)
