Upgrading them just makes them mark XII. Some universal consoles cannot be upgraded (all universals used to have the mark infinity symbol by default).
Might be a silly question but I want to know if it makes ANY difference it I leave an item with the "infinity" symbol" or turn them into mark XII ?
hmm... fair enough.
The difference upgrading an item would make is dependent on your build of course.
If we look at these two screenshots I just took, I gain roughly 30 damage (and roughly 30 DPS - even though item tooltips are cruddy for telling you what the item actually really does in terms of DPS - but it's the in-game numbers).

Ship I'm using for this doesn't have any tactical consoles equipped, because space magic. But by upgrading from infinity to XII I do gain slightly more damage.
Infinity itself means the item is level-scaling up to mark X. Unfortunate that there's no mark 10 phaser quad cannons to compare them to.
You won't be able to equip a mark infinity Quad Phaser Cannon along with a mark XII Quad Phaser Cannon though.
Does that better answer the question?
Yes! Now it does!
Thanks
If it binds to your character it's best to turn it into a Mk XII (used to be Mk X back before level cap was bumped to L65)... If it doesn't and you plan to use it with a low level toon, then it isn't..
