cloaking device
So, if i take the cloaking device from the dreadnought cruiser(galaxy x) and equip it on the any other ship, will it work? Or is it that only some ships are compatible with the cloaking device?

Only some of the fed ships can use the cloak.

Off the top of my head the defiant style escorts and possibly the battlecruiser.

You can use the Console - Universal - Cloaking Device on the Avenger/Arbiter Battlecruiser, Galaxy-X/Yamato Dreadnought Cruisers, the defiant family, and the aquarius from the fleet store.

Personally imho the normal cloak is rather useless, especially if you have to sacrifice a console slot to use it.

Or get a ship with a battlecloak. Some klingon ships have them.

The Defiant set allows for the battle cloak. I suppose it's a matter of debate as to whether it's worth the console slot.

The bird of preys have an enhanced battlecloak. Some other klingon ships do, not necessarily set ones though.

Personally I use the full sovvie set for the cloak because I want the cloak and it's decent in battle.

^ has Enhanced Battle Cloak

Most klingon ships have a standard cloak, but a few have a battlecloak.

Here's a nice list of all the ships that have certain types of cloak: http://sto.gamepedia.com/Cloak

Romulan ones drain singularity power while in use whereas klingon (and fed) ones don't cause those have a warp core. As far as I'm aware that's the only difference.

Edit: Looking at the wiki the normal battle cloak ability gives the player's ship less Stealth than the Romulan battlecloak. Otherwise both cloaks pretty much do the same thing.

The BoP from whatsit, Star Trek 5 or so (not sure which one) has Enhanced Battlecloak. This allows one to fire torpedoes and mines while cloaked.
