BUG: Can't assign a new bridge officer
I've got an open slot on my bridge for a new bridge officer, and I've got a candidate that I should be able to commission and assign. But every time I try to commission the character and assign it to the open slot, the game throws me an error message saying there's no open slots and it won't let me commission him.

I give up. What is supposed to be happening here?

What faction is your captain? What level are you ? What Boff are you trying to commission?
Vellari Jul 8, 2020 @ 2:33am
You might have an open slot on your bridge, but do you also have an open slot in your boff roster on the left side?

Lemme try to answer all of these:

1) Faction is Starfleet, the modern version.
2) Level is 10 or thereabouts; just got to Lieutenant Commander and got my first free ship.
3) Boff is Science officer.

As for Vellari's question---good question...I've definitely got an open slot on the ship (just got a free one for making Lt Commander). The ship class is Nova light science vessel; looks like the "Equinox" from ST:VOY. Comes with two science officer slots.

As I look over the situation, I do NOT see an opening on the left side. This still leaves me confused. I've got an empty science officer slot, and I've got a science officer candidate. The error message I get says there's no room on the bridge for more officers, but that's not right because I DO have an open slot.

What am I missing?

There has to be room on the left. Whatever ship/bridge you are using is irrelevant. If you want to assign a new candidate to your roster you have to dismiss one of your existing ones or level up to gain more slots (or buy more slots, but that's more of an end game thing).

Open your character sheet, if you have an empty Grey slot saying (No Officer) at the bottom of the list on the left side, then you have room to commission another bridge officer.

Well, ok. Ty all for the info. So I went back and checked---I'm definitely level 10. Somehow, the game has given me two Boff candidates, and a ship with an empty slot on the bridge...but somehow I can't activate one of those candidates to fill the slot. Do I have to wait until I level up some more before I can commission one of the candidates?

Wait or dismiss one of your existing officers to free up a slot.

Here's an explanation with a picture...

Pretend the Kelvin Doff that is in the Inventory on the right side and the top is a BOFF..

Now in order to add to the list on the far left, there needs to be one those gray slots that read [No Officer]...

Also there is your Boff Candidates "Boo Box".. It's found on your Stations tab and bottom center by clicking the [SHOW] icon which opens up your Boff Candidate list you have (can use)... It can hold only 15 Boffs at a time.. (It's a holding area for maybe Boffs that you might not be sure about)..

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2163092749

You can also use the Candidates holding 'boo box' to compare with other races of the same field.. An Orion Tac will have different skills then a Human or Klingon does if you turn them into Skill Manual, as will as passive traits.. That way you can pick ones with passives to you fit your needs... Also from the Candidates Box you can sell unbound Boffs on the exchange from it...

I having the same issue being assigned new bridge officers, I have one engineering slot on my bridge but the bridge officers are being assigned to my shuttle not my starship which is my primary ship. I havent found a solution to this problem.
The character this is affecting Discovery Starfleet

Not entirely sure what the problem is. The same officers can be assigned to both ship and shuttle at the same time. Also when you assign an officer a seat on the bridge (of either ship) it does NOT free up a slot in the roster on the left. The list on the left is your total number of bridge officers regardless of bridge assignments.

Yeah i'm not tracking what the issue is much either.. i'm picturing the lower left corner of where you can set either shuttle or starship as active, and maybe an out of order side or something..

Oh yeah, BTW folks, fun fact... when you undock/beam up to your ship in space in your ship, you can save the ship's loadout, which will save what gear/weapons are placed where on ship, along with your skill hotbar layout and placement of skills/items, and the Boff's skills and what station they are placed at when loadout is saved..

(and always lock your skill bar after making changes.. nothing more annoying than when one or two vanish off it)

The confusing part for me is that the game has given me the Boffs, and the ship I have has a slot for one of them (in this case, I've got a Science slot, and a Science Boff candidate), but the game has NOT given me the gray box on the left in which to commission the Science Boff that I have.

I get what y'all are telling me, but I'm hung up on the idea that the game would give me assets to use---and then redraw the lines so I can NOT use them. Since my last post on this, I've moved up to level 12-13, but I still don't have a open box on the left side to put that Boff in.

Goofy. Seriously goofy. I'm hoping that the problem is self-correcting after I get up a few more levels.

That's how it works. Candidate roster is visible at the bottom of the stations tab in case you are wondering.

The solution, other than leveling up (I think 20 gives you more slots), is get rid of one your existing boffs you don't need to free up a slot.

Eventually that happens anyway (you have to dismiss) as you can only have a limited number of boff slots anyway (though way more than in the beginning).

Yeah you will want to dismiss your starting Green Boffs in favor for Blue and Purple...

Now i'm gonna guess you're wondering what is the difference that a Green Boff has compared to a Purple Boff... Well as far using learned abilities (skills) while assigned to a position on your ship, say Beam Overload II.. There isn't any... But..

There is major difference between the rarity (color) of Boffs regarding the potencies of the 4 Traits they each get.. A white colored Boff only gets 2 basic & 2 standard traits.. Where a Purple colored Boff gets 2 Standard & 2 Superior traits... Now what does each of potencies for traits mean you might now ask?

Basic Trait gets a 50% bonus
Standard Trait gets a 100% bonus
Superior Trait gets 150% bonus

These trait bonus are mostly "felt" if they are part of your away team on a ground mission.. But certain Boffs have/get Space traits that give passives that affect your ship in one or more ways.. An example would the trait "Leadership", a trait that humans Boffs get that give a stackable bonus of +5% to the Repair rate of your ship or the trait "Pirate" that Nausicaans get that give a +1.5% stackable all damage bonus and a non-stackable +150 Starship Stealth bonus...

If you exchange refined Dil or just use RL$ for some Zen, buying more Boff slots once you get all the free slot unlocks from leveling up is a wise investment when they go on sale in the zen shop..

The max number of Boffs you can have via slot unlocks is 54..
