I play Tera which uses an action-rpg method of combat, I like that style very much. With STO ground combat, you can go in a pseudo action-rpg style, but it is very clumsy.
Would be nice if they made some sort of energy boxing gloves for people that like to punch their way through problems.
hey, my Melee Caitian has had single hits for well over 9k damage, best being 12k(in PVP), With a Lunge III from cloak, melee can work just fine, you just have to ignore the weapons entirely.
9k damage is more then capable of one shotting anything that's not a boss creature on any difficulty, as most ground targets don't have more then 300-700, and any player to boot.
If you got the dosh you can buy lobi weapons, those tend to be good. Especially the Herald projector which I use and it works great against shielded enemies, I only use it with my tactical character since he has all the weapon buffs that make it even better in combat. Otherwise I think sniper rifles or wide beam pistols are your best choice for all-around combat weaponry. Or if you want to be a badass go grab a sword.
There were those dual wield blades from an event a wee while ago.
The lukari rep wrist thing isnt a bad weapon, decent 2ndry thats an aoe and basic attack arcs to nearby enemies. As with the lobi herald weapon targetting a "back row" enemy can cause it to arc forward and flank the closer ones. Just don't give it to a boff as they'll just constantly swap modes rather than anything useful.
One of the most useful things about lobi weapons is that they level with you so a lowbie toon can buy them and never need another ground weapon ever again as long as you don't drop them into the upgrade window.
The boolean packs a punch but it's a pretty boring weapon otherwise. However if you give a boolean to a boff then not even they can mess that up, unless they're an engie you were stupid enough to give cover shield to or a tac you didnt replace lunge on.
That always made me laugh. Now I always make sure my engie boffs have mines, the health & shield regens, and phaser turret.
My engineer once deployed the cover shield directly infront of a doorway and I got stuck in the middle during a campaign mission. I wanted to dismiss him but I chose not to and gave him a turret.
I would have immediately renamed them Gandalf.
I couldn't cause he was andorian, but I probably would have made them a meme
