best build to not die?
I'm a level 65 commanding a sovereign class and all of my gear is mostly level X-XI, for some reason I keep getting instantly blown up by NPC ships in a few hits or so.

Is there any way I can fix this with a build or something? Or should I just ditch the whole idea of playing against NPCs and play against humans?

Would also help to know what your console layout is in terms of damage resistance.

Edit: Sounds like you've "overleveled" due to double xp weekend and your gear is lagging behind.

Go to reddit.com/r/stobuilds and ask the guys there for help with your build. They'll steer you in the right direction.

There is a Delta Quadrant mission where you meet Neelix and help a Telaxian colony. Reunion maybe I think it's called I dunno. At level 65 it ought to have MK XII Neutronium engineering consoles and the science consoles for shield capacity. Morning coffee is still brewing but you can suss out the names easily enough from the wiki since they're escaping me at the moment. Grind that mission like 8 times so you'll have 4 consoles of each. That ought to help you out since those consoles cost an arm and a leg at the auction house. Cheers and LLAP

Almost certainly this. Cryptic are aware the bonux SP penalty weekend essentially breaks the game for new players, they just don't care :steamfacepalm:

So... do you even have a build yet? Because it's not a build if you ware mixing weapon types (beams/cannons) or energy types (phaser, disruptor, etc.).

The STO Builds Reddit might be a bit deep end, people there sometimes forget that new player survival build should cost a couple of billion EC less than high-end endgame builds (kinda like @Scrooge).

There's also the question of which missions exactly you're on. For example, Romulan enemies tend to be pretty broken with the current level scaling (you basically need Bems Fire at Will or some other AoE boff skill to have a prayer), so that could be a factor. Finding someone to help you over a few missions might actually get you to easier to handle content for a better chance at just earning better gear.

If you have not done so yet, you definitely want to start running TFOs to do reputation projects; these are a pretty important source of acceptable (though not generally great) gear.

Oh, and no, you don't want to PvP in STO. That's a raging dumpster fire tou probably shouldn't tough even with an asbestos 10 foot pole.

Lolz, yeah what Scrooge said Jazzylee. Suck it up and die until you get the BiS; and it's your fault for not playing 2 years ago when you could have got some sweet ♥♥♥♥, you oughta played then to equip them now dawg, whats a matta you. He he he he he he he he

What i am going to tell you is for the immediate fix that is free to play friendly.

I am guessing you are flying this > https://sto.gamepedia.com/Assault_Cruiser
(if you are in this ship, you need to work your way into a Tier 6 ship)

On the exchange, Shop for Blue gear of MK XII rank, maybe try green if you cannot find blue, Try purple also.

Ship gear get: Field Stablizing warp core, Positron Deflector, Combat Impulse engine (Aux) (Turn), Covariant Shield Array (cap) (reg) (amp)?

Consoles get: Neutronium Alloy, Field emiter, RCS Accelerator, SIF Generator, Emitter Array, Field Generator, Phaser Relay, Directed Energy Dist Manifold, Zero Point quantum Chamber

Weapons get: 2 quantum torps, 6 Phaser Beam Arrays

https://sto.gamepedia.com/Ship_weapon
https://sto.gamepedia.com/Omni-Directional_Phaser_Beam_Array
https://sto.gamepedia.com/Incontrovertible_Defenses#Preeminent_Warp_Core

Then start running episodes and shopping that give you purple gear of the same type or better.
From the mission “Sunrise” (Beam Array, torp and console)
From the mission “Beyond the Nexus” (Omni Beam Array, torp and console ).
The Incontrovertible Defenses is a four-piece space set available as rewards for completing Mission: Melting Pot.

Only play TFOs on Normal difficulty, and expect to die sometimes.

On DPS ships, console slots are mainly used for more damage, set bonuses and clicky powers. You mostly get survival from traits and a boff power or two.

Do the mission "Step Between The Stars" 3 times, yes it's a little long, yes it's a repeat, but in the end you will get a decent ship set for your level, also do your rep stuff for decent ship/ground weapons. Likewise do the mission "Temporal Front" 3 times for a real nice ground set. After that, save your dilithium up for the phoenix events that happen every few months, and convert every phoenix token from very rare to uncommon into upgrade tokens which will make you very formidable on the battlefield.

Oh and if you want an easy ground mission experience, use two science officers that are both skilled in medical nanite I, and medical tricorder.

Yeah...don't do "A Step Between Stars". Unless you want to fly a Dyson Science Destroyer outfitted with XII gear against level 65 undine dreadnoughts.

That mission does not scale well.

Interestingly, I found that cake walk easy last I tried. I think this may be a mission that actually breaks scaling, either giving you way too easy or way too hard, but never meaningful.

Oh stay out of the Detla quadrant till you have upgraded your ship and gear. The Detla quadrant has a higher difficulty rating.

On a personal note, i tried the Assist Ocampa Freighter mission to get some delta marks and could not do it. I have a new lvl 65 Romulan Tac captain driving the free t5 Ha'feh Assault Warbird (escort) with ok gear and i kept dying to Hirogen battleship and escorts while solo.

Your issue with Hirogen isn't going to be your gear, its going to be your understanding of and use of boff abilities to counter their two favourite attacks: tractor beam and placate. The frigates like to lay down tractor beams, and the battleships open fights with a 20-second placate. The tractor beams you can break with things like Polarize Hull, and the placate can be dismissed with things like Science Team.

LOL say what? You literally get NPC's to help you out with them. I beat it multiple times back when there was a graphical glitch that blacked out the entire screen. If you consider it hard, I don't know what to tell you.
