New Player Mistakes!
So reached a lvl 30 in a week and a half not hard to do. Went with a tactical and escort ships cause for me they turn and fly faster. Than it came to choosing a ship at level 30. And for whatever reason I picked a cruiser and absolutley hate it. Which I'm not 100% sure but I don't think STO allows you to sell FTP acquired ships for any currency. Which leads me to believe aside from mining dilithium I'm stuck with this ship contemplating starting over just because I really wanted an Escort class. If there is a way to swap ships/sell them please let me know.

Less comprehensive is better just the cards on the table what (Possible Mistakes) can a FTP player make? In terms of spending Dilithium? Choosing perk points under the 3 classes for Ground and Space (focus on one or all)? Choosing bridge crew (Is it okay to do all humans and vulcans?) Or like I think I did buy the wrong ship... Any other game breaking or detremential choices in the game?

It is terribly stupid a poor choice to not let players with 5 or 6 toon slots not be able to CHANGE THEIR CLASS or CHANGE THEIR SHIP TYPE!!! Starting over isn't fun seeing you can replay missions. Like for real? They don't even let you test out ships. And from what I hear there are no new ships after level 40. You have to buy them with real money or play a once a year event quest. So tier 5 and 6 ships are out of the question for ftp players...

On a last note I will give the game another run through with my tactical and all escort ships this time. Unless someone tells me how to swap or sell to replace my cruiser with an escort. It is too bad you can't change the RACE or SEX of your Toon as well in game. Which could be another costly mistake. Me I'm sticking with the Female straight up. I'll be honest I don't much like FTP game models. And think they need to be phased out!!! I gave a bunch of those games a try even a long 6 month try coming from console and physical copies I could beat in 2 weeks I hate it. I hate having content locked gambiling in a VIDEO GAME you kids may never know what a ONE TIME PURCHASE IS. But Digital content isn't real. A game was. But Age Of Conan was hindered your progression in the game, there was an in game currency for real money which is outrageously stupid. Ghost in the Shell: First Assault another FTP this one I paid money for and they SUNSET the title which means pulled it and didn't refund the players. So yeah long rant off topic sorry but I ABOSOLUTLEY can't stand the (business models of TODAY.) I bought games when there was no such thing as DLC!!! No such thing as in game memberships. And FREE TO PLAY was called a DEMO........ Ever FTP game I tried was a CASH COW SYSTEM... The latest I got into was MARVEL CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS. It's greed. It does not cost a fortune to keep global servers running. WE ARE HEADED TOWARDS DARK TIMES where everything will cost money. Being born, dying, ICT Individual Carbon Tax, everything is being monotized and compartmentalized for cost. Oh are there hidden costs yep. It's my one time to rant and rave about the once good nature of the VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY... And the Dangers of single component digital consumerism... Thanks.

Ps. Sorry for digressing off topic. But is there a way to change my class, species, sex, and more importantly SHIP after a choice? Any way to sell the ship? To get 1 purhcase token back to try another? They really gonna make you start over a new toon??? Any other costly mistakes for a FTP player. Huge thanks. As it stands I enjoy the game thoroughly for what it is.

Class, Sex, and Race are cannot be changed after selection. Though I don't know the specifics this probably mostly has to do with how character models are handled in game (and it's pretty standard fare for MMORPGs to not let you change that kind of stuff anyway).
Ships chosen between lvl 10-30 are inconsiquential as they become quickly useless, save for Admiralty, once you get a knew one. It's the T5 and T5-U ships you recieve at Lvl 45 and 61, respectively, that you want to choose carefully.
Everything else boils down to specific questions that are best asked individually.

No, you cannot "undo" a token ship. You have to buy the other ships of same tier either with dilithium or zen (btw, the zen ships unlock for the entire account forever. So if you buy one of those, every toon you make after that (of the same faction) will have said ship for free). However for the lower tiers it really doesn't matter, you will not be using the ships for very long anyway.

You get one more token ship at L61 these days. The "end-game" ships are indeed either event ship freebies or purchased with dil/zen or grind. Ship-sales is the bulk of the developer income for sure, not going to change.

FTP business model is what it is. In this game though, actual money is not necessary at all if you are in it for the long haul. There isn't anything in the game (apart from lifetime member perks) that cannot be acquired without money. Tons and tons of grind required though.

Race/sex/class cannot be changed. What type of ship you use is only limited by faction.
Thanks Fedora01 and Vellari for your answers. Greatly appreciated. So even if I had the dilithium to buy a t4 tactical you'd spend the dilithium on something else instead? Is the game beatable with every class and ship combination?
I thought about

Uh, first off, there are only tiny handful or so MMORPGs where you can class change, so no, it's not stupid. Second, uh, play the cruiser until 40 and get your next free ship.

Also Dilithium is the most valuable thing in the game. It should only ever be spent: upgrading gear, buying Fleet items, donating, reputations, and ZEN Ecchange. Or Phoenix Packs when they're available. Anything else you're wasting it as a new player.

Unfortunately this part makes me think you're a troll. For one, I can't think of ANY game where you can change your race and sex. What kind of games are you playing? They aren't MMORPGs. And saying the free to play model should be phased out is basically saying people shouldn't be allowed to play if they don't have money. One mnore thing, there is no gambling in STO, NONE. Lockboxes are a noob trap, they rarely contain anything worthwhile. You DO buy the good stuff outright at a one time cost. Khopesh, 3000 ZEN, $30. Please do not level false accusations. That's not cool. It's pay to play that needs to be phased out, not free to play. Microtransactions are good when done right, and this game... does it right. No pay to win, justpay for time. Easy peasy. A free player can have EVERYTHING a paid playing can have, just takes work instead of cash.

It's Level 40, not 61. And 30-40 goes by faster than all other levels. And having a T4 cruiser will greatly help the OP in Admiralty. OP needs to fly the Galaxy until 40 and then go back to escorts and he'll profit in Admiralty later on.

Last token used to be 40. Victory is Life added more levels (65) and a new token at 61.

Correct, I would not spend dil (or zen) on low tier ships. Absolutely everything costs DIL after L50 so save up. The PVE content is most definitely doable with any combination, don't even need a T5U/T6 ship if your build is somewhat decent otherwise.

Lmao right. Even straight up paid games now usually have loot boxes or pay walls so I don't get what he's going on about. If you want to spend money you can.

Wait what?

Is this true? Cuz uh... When I hit 61 when I came back I didn't get any notice of another free ship.

I need to log on and check this out. I'll be back. I know you still get your first T5 at 40 because I've leveled new characters. But none of them told me I got another token!

Holy crap.

Checking this right now.
Son of a mother... Wow they need to make that more clear. I didn't even get a notification! But sure enough, there it is, an upper T5 vessel (three to pick from per faction) at Level 61. Mind blown.
As long as you get stuff from the game, you can't replace it. Although most of what you get in game, is inferior to what you get from the Cstore; so if you made a bad choice, don't worry and just get enough points to buy the ship you like.

If you are a free player; your selection is much smaller; maybe you can join a guild and get a nicer ship...people in the community are pretty helpful; as long as you don't become too greedy ;)
I just hope he keeps the cruiser and just gets the right ship at 40. It WILL help with Admiralty. And I'm the only one bringing that up. The T4 cruiser being off-spec for him gives him an advantage in that he'll have an easier time with a second grouping of tasks. Both the T2 and the T4 ships do this.

To the OP, Admiralty starts at like Level 53 and is a major aspect of getting resources late game. The ship you got by accident, the T4 cruiser, has a special ability that gives +8 ENG per SCI or TAC ships, and every ship you ever acquires goes into the Admiralty pool. Noramlly you would have TAC missions well done but struggle at first with ENG and SCI. This will help with the former.

That is not strictly true. Any ship you acquire but discharge before reaching level 53 will not appear in your admiralty list.

True, most (if not all) can be reclaimed in order to add them to admiralty, and then immediately discharged again.

Who would discharge before 53? Even a new free player has enough slots to keep all ships they acquire through to endgame. There is never a good reason to discharge before max level.

Also, I'm not sure you're even correct. My Romulan used Phoenix tokens to get the Tanius for Admiralty at Level 15, and it showed up when Admiralty was unlocked, which makes me think your list is filled out prior to actually unlocked Admiralty. But I don't actually know for sure, never actually did it, never needed to and never thought it was a good idea.

To the OP, discharging ships prior to endgame is definitely a MISTAKE. Don't do it.
