Ships chosen between lvl 10-30 are inconsiquential as they become quickly useless, save for Admiralty, once you get a knew one. It's the T5 and T5-U ships you recieve at Lvl 45 and 61, respectively, that you want to choose carefully.
Everything else boils down to specific questions that are best asked individually.
You get one more token ship at L61 these days. The "end-game" ships are indeed either event ship freebies or purchased with dil/zen or grind. Ship-sales is the bulk of the developer income for sure, not going to change.
FTP business model is what it is. In this game though, actual money is not necessary at all if you are in it for the long haul. There isn't anything in the game (apart from lifetime member perks) that cannot be acquired without money. Tons and tons of grind required though.
Race/sex/class cannot be changed. What type of ship you use is only limited by faction.
Uh, first off, there are only tiny handful or so MMORPGs where you can class change, so no, it's not stupid. Second, uh, play the cruiser until 40 and get your next free ship.
Also Dilithium is the most valuable thing in the game. It should only ever be spent: upgrading gear, buying Fleet items, donating, reputations, and ZEN Ecchange. Or Phoenix Packs when they're available. Anything else you're wasting it as a new player.
Unfortunately this part makes me think you're a troll. For one, I can't think of ANY game where you can change your race and sex. What kind of games are you playing? They aren't MMORPGs. And saying the free to play model should be phased out is basically saying people shouldn't be allowed to play if they don't have money. One mnore thing, there is no gambling in STO, NONE. Lockboxes are a noob trap, they rarely contain anything worthwhile. You DO buy the good stuff outright at a one time cost. Khopesh, 3000 ZEN, $30. Please do not level false accusations. That's not cool. It's pay to play that needs to be phased out, not free to play. Microtransactions are good when done right, and this game... does it right. No pay to win, justpay for time. Easy peasy. A free player can have EVERYTHING a paid playing can have, just takes work instead of cash.
It's Level 40, not 61. And 30-40 goes by faster than all other levels. And having a T4 cruiser will greatly help the OP in Admiralty. OP needs to fly the Galaxy until 40 and then go back to escorts and he'll profit in Admiralty later on.
Last token used to be 40. Victory is Life added more levels (65) and a new token at 61.

Correct, I would not spend dil (or zen) on low tier ships. Absolutely everything costs DIL after L50 so save up. The PVE content is most definitely doable with any combination, don't even need a T5U/T6 ship if your build is somewhat decent otherwise.
Lmao right. Even straight up paid games now usually have loot boxes or pay walls so I don't get what he's going on about. If you want to spend money you can.
Wait what?
Is this true? Cuz uh... When I hit 61 when I came back I didn't get any notice of another free ship.
I need to log on and check this out. I'll be back. I know you still get your first T5 at 40 because I've leveled new characters. But none of them told me I got another token!
Holy crap.
Checking this right now.
If you are a free player; your selection is much smaller; maybe you can join a guild and get a nicer ship...people in the community are pretty helpful; as long as you don't become too greedy ;)
To the OP, Admiralty starts at like Level 53 and is a major aspect of getting resources late game. The ship you got by accident, the T4 cruiser, has a special ability that gives +8 ENG per SCI or TAC ships, and every ship you ever acquires goes into the Admiralty pool. Noramlly you would have TAC missions well done but struggle at first with ENG and SCI. This will help with the former.
That is not strictly true. Any ship you acquire but discharge before reaching level 53 will not appear in your admiralty list.
True, most (if not all) can be reclaimed in order to add them to admiralty, and then immediately discharged again.
Who would discharge before 53? Even a new free player has enough slots to keep all ships they acquire through to endgame. There is never a good reason to discharge before max level.
Also, I'm not sure you're even correct. My Romulan used Phoenix tokens to get the Tanius for Admiralty at Level 15, and it showed up when Admiralty was unlocked, which makes me think your list is filled out prior to actually unlocked Admiralty. But I don't actually know for sure, never actually did it, never needed to and never thought it was a good idea.
To the OP, discharging ships prior to endgame is definitely a MISTAKE. Don't do it.
