Well, there are some awesome traits and a lot of garbage (aka "situational") traits out there.. My personal favourites are:

Peak Efficiency (Vonph) - -7.5% recharge to all boff powers every 5 seconds so long as your hull is 80% or higher. This is NOT affected by the minimum recharge times, it keeps shaving seconds off the recharge regardless.

Emergency Weapon Cycle (Arbiter/Kurak) - When you use EP2W you get -25% power cost and 20% firing haste for 30 seconds (the entire duration of ep2w). Since its easy to get the CD of ep2w down to 30 seconds, you can have this up all the time.

Honored Dead (Exchange/Sarcophagus) - Easy for non KDF to get, unlikely for KDF, this trait is monster defense even after it was nerfed by half. Every 10,000 points of damage you take you get +20 all resist, stacking to +200.. after that each would-be stack instead gives you 10,000 temporary hit points. Resists last until you're out of combat (then decay unless you cloak)

Supremacy (Astika) - +2 to all power settings for 15 sec for each target you hit with Scatter Volley or Fire At Will, stacking to +20. Unless you're a torpedo boat, you're probably using one or the other regularly, and this is as close to the old plasmonic leech as you're likely to get.

Invincible (Zahl) - 8 seconds invulnerability when you would otherwise die, and +50% hull and shield healing during that time... once every 120 seconds. I don't use it, but it's a mainstay of PVP builds, and of anyone who finds they need a get-out-of-death-free card routinely.

Reciprocity (Intel Escort/Exchange) - -10% recharge on tactical (and intel) abilities any time an enemy misses you.

Quirky Choices
--------------------
These are some of my personal faves, though are unlikely to be seen on the more serious DPS builds:

Automated Aggression (Tzen-tar) - Hardest to get, and will likely get nerfed someday, but this one launches protomatter bombs at the closest enemy any time you use a tactical ability, which do damage and sometimes leave a radiation cloud. It's gimmicky in its intended form, but there's a bug in the trait that lets you trigger it over and over and over with a single tactical ability, carpet bombing the enemy and leaving a stack of radiation clouds. Makes short work of the slow-moving boss ships on the days it decides to target them (instead of some nearby dweeb minion).

Subspace Reinforcements (Ornash) - When you take damage you summon elachi support craft that will attack enemies and throw hull and shield heals on you. They last 30 seconds, with no cooldown, with a max 2 out at a time... which is.. all the time if you engage in combat. I love those little guys!

Those are both PVP traits. The sheshar's torpedo trait has a 30 second cooldown, so it is primarily useful for one double high-yield attack - that sort of burst damage isn't going to do much for you in PVE.

The jem hadar rapid fire extension trait is nice, but again, PVP oriented. People generally use Scatter Fire in PVE rather than rapid fire which is single-target high burst damage.

What you're saying does highlight one thing, though - the choice of traits to pursue will heavily depend on what you plan to do in STO. If it's PVPing then you're building things differently than if you're focusing on PVE, and you'll likely be using different boff powers, skill choices, and doff slotting.

Well, are there any decent/usefull PvE traits on the exchange at the moment?
It looks like most of the traits mentioned in here are tied to specific ships...

There aren't many starship traits that aren't tied to specific ships.. its what makes them starship traits. There are a couple of rare ones like Scramble Fighters, which was basically the cornerstone of every carrier build for a long time... but mostly lockbox traits are space or ground, not starship.

For space traits, there are some good ones. The recent lockbox added Context is for Kings which should be pretty cheap on the exchange. It's an excellent space trait that fits almost all builds.

I'll have to go look... unlike starship traits I haven't memorized many of the regular space and ground traits names.

Thank you, got Context is for Kings for 400k of the exchange, but the other one is out of my reach with prices over 60m EC.

Unless you're building a carrier you don't want Scramble Fighters anyway. In fact, since they made it subject to the 20 second invulnerability lockout, and they gave all hangar pets immunity to core breach damage, it's not even particularly necessary on those (which is why its down to 60m instead of twice that).

If you're Fed, you can get Honored Dead, which I mentioned above. It is an awesome survival trait, and should be reasonably priced on the exchange (its from the latest lockbox). If you're KDF then Black Alert is the counterpart to that... it's not as universally useful, but if you use rapid fire, beam overload, or intel abilities it's a good source of periodic burst damage (it summons clones of your ship that fire torpedo spreads at the target of your abilities and nearby enemies).

I got Honored Dead as well, anything else you would recommend for an engineer?
