XIII–XIV?
My ship is equipped with mostly XII gear and I'm wondering if I should hold off for better gear before using my Universal Tech upgrades on them? I don't know if you get better drops or not and don't want to waste the upgrades.
Thanks

Save universal for when upgrading from very rare to epic only.

superior upgrades to get to 14 universal, experimental or omega upgrades to get a 14 item to UR or epic
So universals work better going from ultra to epic?

Uh... "mostly XII gear" is not much of a description, really. What kind of XII exactly gear does matter.

If you've got 3 diferent energy types of beams, with a cannon and a turret thrown in for good measure, on a ship with a standard deflector, some random mission reward shields plus a couple of random white and green consoles... you probably should hold off upgrading until you've got the build sorted out (and replaced much of that gear).

If it's actually gear than synergizes with each other nicely in a build you can see yourself using longer-term, this weekend is perfect for upgrading.

Personally, from your original posting, I suspect you're closer to the former than to the latter.

Gonna go out on a limb and guess that you used that tech upgrade on that MK-xii..

But i'm gonna put this out there anyways (maybe you didn't though)..

The proper question is what is your desired goal with the MK-XII item? at that level the odds of it flipping gold is hella hella low (I was hella shocked when my crafted Ultra Rare Wide Arc DHC hit Epic on the final upgrade to XIV on only a 2%)...

If you are just wanting it upgraded to Mk XIV, then don't use that on it.. just get some Superior Tech and use x2 Tech point accelerators...

Tech upgrades like that one with a x2 bonus to qual chance is best used on a MK-ii item, has stats you want in it.. Then you also add in a x2 research point accelerator which will bump the odds of it crit'in to x4..

The lower MK level an item is the better the odds of crit'in and bumping up into the next quality..

So that Universal Tech is worth 12,800 tech points, and I think which should take a Mk-ii up to a Mk-vii if stays Ultra and maybe a Mk-vi if it hits Epic early.. Which means each time it upgrades to the next MK, it rolls for a chance to gain a higher quality... And using that on Mk-ii would give you 5 to 7 chances to at 40% odds each time.. And if that Uni-Tech is a 30k one that will take a Mk-ii to Mk-ix or Mk-x

Before the re-engineer item was added, We who crafted weapons/gear would spend hours and hours rolling up the correct mk-ii's (like a DHC x3 CritD for a Crit build toon, or x3 CritH for Crit hit chance build player) and when we'd then prayed that when we upgraded them that the new modifier stats that get added were the same and not something unwanted making the crafting a failure (like the x3 CritD got a Acc or CritH etc).. Now it's SOoooo much easier to make an Epic Weapon with x4 (CritD) & (Pen) etc... I already had around 50 Mk-ii weapons and turned about 30 into epics during the upgrade XP event.. Many were for my herald baltim raider which I changed from using DBB to DHC on it and omFG, the damage it does with 5 DHC's..

With 1 Omega Particle & one x2 Res Point Acc, then later on I think around 4 or 5 Superior Tech with a x2 Tech points got them up from IX to XIV I crafted 16 of these beastly beauties plus a few AP Dual Beams..

Just a hint, you cannot get items over Mk XII as drops, only as listed mission rewards (which I believe doesn't include anything XIV).

Just like you never get drops that are over purple quality. Ultra and epic are upgrade only rarities, unless its bought from fleet stores (which don't offer anything epic FYI).

In other words, if you are waiting for the game to drop an epic mk XIV weapon on you at some point... you will be waiting forever.
