Roleplay
How is the roleplay in STO? I recently got into Star Trek (and roleplay) and I would really like to indulge myself in said universe though I'm not sure where to start.

You'd be better off finding some non-videogame RPG over STO.

Not to deter you, but STO doesn't really have the quality for good ST RP.

a) The game is not about star trek reached a point, unfortunately.
b) There is basically little roleplay in STO.

As Pavel said, if what you want is actual roleplay, STO is not for you. I know, i know, weird keeping in mind what star trek is about, but, its how it is. You have CBS and Cryptic/pwe to blame for that.

Could either of you elaborate as to why STO isn't suited for roleplay? :o

If you're looking to learn about the Star Trek universe, just understand that Star Trek Online is a messy starting point. But if we're being honest, so are the TV shows and movies. I personally had a pretty shallow understanding of Star Trek before I started playing the game, and it inspired me to spend the many, many hours catching up on most of the TV shows (still haven't watched Voyager or Discovery), so don't listen to these people who tell you it's a horrible thing you should never play. Just keep in mind while playing that it's imperfect and places a hugely disproportionate emphasis on combat and warfare as a matter of necessity to appeal to gamers.

Now as to roleplay, don't expect the general playerbase to spare a moment of thought for it, but you can find pockets of it. There are some guilds (called "fleets" here) that use STO as a platform to conduct dice rolling style RP, for example. There also is/was some casual walkup "tavern RP" going on, although with Quark's possibly being added to the general DS9 map instead of being a separate zone, the devs may have unintentionally killed that off and sent RP back to the specialty fleets and private channels forever. Bottom line: You'll have to track down a dedicated fleet to find anything worth RPing. Don't even think about doing anything over the public channels, which are cancerous per usual in MMOs.

If you want background info on star trek, there are a lot of books, not necessarily canon, but they do provide something to fill the gaps in.
As for roleplay, there are fleets that seem more 'dedicated' to roleplay, if you ask around, you might find one, and as n3mes1s said, you have nothing to lose by trying, except for a bit of time obviously.

You could try STO RP[www.storp.org].

Well, or, is you're looking for a specific type of RP, I guess you could try creating a half-naked Orion and walk into Drozana... :pandashocked:

If you are into RP, but don't mind text-based roleplaying, I have a Discord server that is brand new. I'm stil looking for more people to join my bridge crew. I also have a subreddit.

Your capacity to negatively contribute to a discussion is truly otherworldly. I should know better than to ask for any insight by now, but do you not read the text in this game? Do you just rely on sounds and animation cues? I mean, if this game contained all the diplomacy and cultural exploration and scientific discovery that are the hallmarks of good Star Trek as opposed to all the combat pew-pew-pew that both you and I notice is too prevalent here, they would be almost entirely text-based game mechanics. That's precisely the gap that text-based RP currently fills. To conduct diplomacy as a MMO style mini-game with our unvoiced main characters would be what, precisely? Press F to make frustrated hand gestures? Maybe we could have a DDR style rhythm game in which we have to perfectly time emotes to express our confusion, disbelief, frustration and ultimate despair with the other party's viewpoints. I'm kinda playing that game right now in my head. It sucks.

Rp is doable here, the tools are present, it just sounds like the infrastructure (if not the motivation) is lacking. Communic ation between the players is the bridge to that and that could bwe mitigated via discord (for voice interactions) or by using the in-game "chat bubbles" to conversly interact with one another. All's required to do it is ... to do it. For me, this experience has been a giant and glorious exercise in rp, albeit a solo one... "Cadet Bnn rHual PylaeAjarre - Species: Ahluryan" reporting for duty!
Benzrathe May 4, 2018 @ 4:57pm
True, IF you're wholly dependent on the game to provide the "play". That's not really neccessary. The RPER should be filling in the discrepencies/inadequacies - the game is just the canvas, we should be the paint. It's a damn fine canvas too, if you ask me.

We have a 3D world HUGELY based on the universe we all fell in love with. We get to even Captain a ship/Fleet withIN said universe! How we utilized that in telling OUR stories, is entirely up to us. But it SO can be done. =} I'm about to start my TOD (tour of duty) for today, and have an intuition that some of the fringe colonies would benefit from some Federation patrols in their quadrant. I feel like exploring today {while scouting for more sites to incorporate into my rp ;) }
I'm still brand new, which probably explains my enthusiasm, but I'm having a blast! =} Peace!

Some people are "dependent", I guess. Maybe I play the game differently. I'm not playing it as a fan reliving the serial nostalgia of certain episodic nuances. I play as an actual member of the Federation (newly admitted), hailing from a galaxy of my own creation. IN the game, not on paper n3mes1s, not sure where you got that idea. I'm creating my OWN episodes, using the tools provided by and within the game. I just generate my own narrative in my game play. Or am I missing your point, and you're speaking more to quailty control? Perhaps you just like being obstinate. =}

Oh, btw...

Where I'm not a fan of rping "on paper", I wouldn't call it "stupid". In fact, done right ALL rp is quite challenging (for some more than others, of course). My apologies if I've mislead you into believing me an advocate. I, too, am a digital junkie ISO a real holo-suite, and I thank Star Trek for that too. :)

You wanna find an RP fleet. There are still some around. Or a Fleet that has people who want to RP in it. Rare but not non-existant.
BiteyCanadian May 19, 2019 @ 7:48pm
Star trek online has a growing roleplay community, and counter to the people who claim otherwise are just not looking, DS9 Instance 1 is a bigy for roleplays, Starbase 381 is a fleet owned starbase that runs as a roleplay hub,

If anyone wants to join an Rp focused fleet. My fleet has a few rp ships up and running . We rp on fridays and saturdays so feel free to hop on and ask around
This is the server link. Look forward to seeing all you rpers there
